Week #11: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 6/25)

by Ken Sawyers
June 28, 2017

The 2017 Holliston Senior Softball Season ended with a familiar scene as Braggville cruised to an undefeated season (9-0) with a 17-11 win over Anthony’s East in the ‘A’ Championship Game.  Chris Cordani led a balanced offensive attack with 3 hits while teammate Chad Engel had 2 doubles and 4 RBI.  Anthony’s was without their inspirational leader, John Shanahan who was preparing for his role in the upcoming Revolutionary War re-enactment this weekend in Lexington.  Break a Leg, John!! A depleted Downtown squad edged a sloppy DYR  9-7 behind the crafty pitching of Mike Adams and some timely hitting by the lower third of the order. SS John Drohan was almost decapitated by a broken bat in the 5th but still managed to make the putout.  Kampersal scored early and often in their 14-3 beat down of Dalton Rd who limped to the finish line with 3 straight losses and still managed to stay up in the ‘A’ division.  Look for manager, Steve Cotto, to make some moves this off-season to shake up this talented, yet complacent veteran squad.  In the cruelest of ironies, Jasper Rock beat South 17-12 behind Derek Cordon’s 4-4 effort but, based on tie breakers, will move down to ‘B’ division along with South.

When the final out settled into the glove of the nameless outfielder for the final out, Mudville claimed the “B’ Division championship with an 11-5 win over Lions and earned the move up to ‘A’ next season. OF Eric Higgins paced the offense with 4 hits and 3 RBI while 3B Eric “Big Daddy” Kuharich had 2 doubles.  1B Errick Spada flashed the leather around the bag digging out several low throws from ‘Big Daddy’.  Despite the loss, Lions will move up to ‘A ‘and we’ll see if OF Ernie “the Hit Machine’ Tomacelli can handle this step up and continue to put up video game-like offensive stats.  Long Distance Tire slipped by Queens 8-5 behind 1B Chris Landers’ 3 hits (including an inside-the-park HR).  The husky first baseman has put up MVP numbers this season and could be set to hold out for a new contract prior to next season.  Finally, in a game nobody cared about except the 24 guys playing in it, Brentwood nipped the Hood 19-18.

A big “Thank You” to Mike and his staff at Anthony’s on the Green for being our host this year.  The food is terrific, the beer is cold, and the service is prompt- not what we’re accustom to.  We look forward to seeing you next season!

Eric, You mean Ken "HR" Sawyers or at least Ken "ESPN" Sawyers. Correct?

The Mudville squad would like to thank Ken 'CNN' Sawyers for his fair and balanced reporting of the weekly old man softball match ups in both the A and B league.

Long Distance Tire WON their game because Alan Goldberg, Jon Juhl, and Kevin Conley were at the same wedding with Shanny and Pipes! Had we been there???

- Kevin Conley | 6/30/17 11:06 AM

FYI...Shannahan and I were at a wedding. More fake news to deal with. Shanny and I hated missing the A game. But it was a great year for our Anthony's East team, especially with the addition of stud Ben Pratt! Thanks to our long time coach Papa Jack Connors who is handing over the reins to Mike Delprete. We're comin' to get ya Braggville in 2018!

Most demoralizing, especially since the report was written by an athlete

- Paul Saulnier | 6/28/17 8:12 PM

Now I know why athletes don't like reporters. No mention of the improvement by the queens squad and zero game coverage of our almost heroic win.
