Iron Eyes Cody Would be Proud of the Holliston Lion's Club

by Bobby Blair
April 27, 2018

King Lion Ged Gove and the lion pack were out on Route 16/126 early Saturday morning picking up what others had inconsiderately thrown out of their vehicle windows.

Gove told the HollistonReporter.com that the #1 trash d'jour item for the morning seemed to be nip bottles. "We do a stretch of road from Cross Street to Paul Road once monthly from April to October. The Lions Club will join Holliston in Bloom on May 5th & 6th for a townwide cleanup day under a banner of Keep Massachusetts Beautiful.

Further up Route 16 near Paul Road, Lions Roger Rogers, Tammy Kline and Sissy Seeto fill their yellow bags which are then stored at 1750 Washington Street and Bazel's parking lot for the highway department to pick up on Monday morning. Kline noted the many nip bottles as well as condom wrappers.

A commercial popular in the early 70's gave rise to an anti-littering campaign that educated baby boomers to the effects of discarding one's trash about the landscape. For those old enough, Iron Eyes Cody will ring a bell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7OHG7tHrNM

Yet another commercial followed the Iron Eyes "Keep America Beautiful" attempt to curb trashing. Woodys, the Give a Hoot Don't Pollute Owl appereared in the late 70's to mid 80's. Take a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co0Vh1C9NfYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co0Vh1C9NfY

From the looks of things along our roadways Saturday morning,  maybe we could all use a refresher course from Iron Eyes Cody and Woodsy.

The Lions Club of Holliston have been a participating in the Adopt A Highway program, promoted the Conservation Associates, for many years ago. Thank you to all those Lions who have kept Holliston roadsides clean for so many years.
