Blair Square Committee Meets

by Bobby Blair
December 1, 2018

Blair Square Study Committee meet Monday night and now have in hand several renderings of what the area behind Casey's Crossing will look like if their plans are endorsed. The conceptual drawings (there were two)  include a parking lot along the length of the trail between Central and Church Streets. One diagram showed perpendicular parking, while another showed diagonal parking spaces. The latter would involve an easement from Casey's and according to member Peter Barbieri, owner John McCarthy is agreeable. The plan also gives access to several local businesses at either end of this section of trail. Access to the parking would be one way from Central to Church Street.

With a plan in hand, committee members began plans for the gazebo side of Blair Square.

Plans from Beals & Thomas were circulated showing envisioned ideas of a park long before the present day Blair Square came into existance.

While several of those envisioned elements now exist including a gazebo and public gardens the remainder of several ideas are up for grabs. The veterans would like a space for their flagpole and a monument according to member Walter McGrath. While one picnic table is located near the kiosk, more could be sighted in the Square.

The idea of a public bathroom located in a caboose again arose at the meeting. Siting of other venues such as a child's playground are all in the mix, along with parking along Front Street. The committee has no funds at the moment and hopes to apply for grants or put an article on town meeting warrant. Barbieri said that the idea of a caboose at the trail would be privately funded, and McGrath said a veterans monument would be paid for by local veterans organizations.
