Selectmen's Meeting - Quick Bits

Bar Athena will open in the Jasper Cafe downtown location on February 1st according to owners/operators Lisa Mendoza Wood and Gordon Wood of Hopedale (photo).

Bar Athena
Selectmen approved the transfer of the All-Alcohol beverage license from Jasper to Black Mountain Foods, i.e., the Woods. Lisa Wood is a chef with almost 20 years of experience.  The Woods will be offering classic cocktails and European cuisine in a "neighborhood" restaurant style, focusing on seasonal menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will  open around 11:00 weekdays for lunch seating and take-out and then dinner at 5:00 and close at 9:00. On weekends, they will serve BRUNCH!! on Saturdays and Sundays. Closing will be 9:00 on weekdays and 10:00 Friday and Saturdays and 3:00 on Sunday.

9 Green Street
Town Treasurer and Tax Collector Mary Bousquet got the green light from Selectmen to proceed with a tax taking of the property at 9 Green Street (behind the Gulf Station downtown.) Owner Ray Garcia is in default of $122,000 in taxes and has been unable to sell the property and settle accounts.

Jay Marsden pointed out that the town could flip the property or could choose to develop it into a parking lot or something else, but either way, the town would do well to control the outcome of this property and recoup the value of the taxes. The property will be in Land Court as of December 6th, but this can be a very slow process -- even years-long.

At recent meetings, the Selectmen have discussed holding conversations with stakeholders about the property to determine the best approach. John Cronin said,  " It's a phenomenal location we can turn into as asset of one sort or another."

Golf Course and Restaurant Management Recommendations
Deborah Moore, chair of the Golf Course Advisory Committee told the Board of Selectmen that Anthony's on the Green was the only applicant for the contract to operate the restaurant, but the Committee was very satisfied with the way in which Mike Ficco has handled the operation over the past five years. The application that was submitted did not include all the required information including financial data, however, so Selectmen directed the Committee to get it from Ficco.

The Committee reviewed course management proposals from Johnson Golf Managment and from New England Golf Course Management. There were many areas in which the two bidders received the same "rating" in the criteria, but in the end, based on the service provided in the past few years, the Committee recommended going with Johnson. Selectmen asked to see all applications and the RFPs to review the details of the process and the proposals before making final decisions. The current contracts expire December 31st.
