Born July 1, 1947 in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late John P and Nora E. (Carroll) Murphy and the stepson of the late Ann (Flynn) Murphy. John grew up in Holliston, MA and was a 1965 graduate of Holliston High School and went on to get his Bachelors Degree from Framingham State College. He could be seen pacing nervously as he cheered on his Boston sports teams. He enjoyed scratching his grand-dogs, but most importantly he enjoyed his time spent with his family and friends.
