Conservation Commission January 8th Meeting Highlights

by Chris Cain
January 12, 2019

Among the topics discussed at the most recent bi-weekly of the Conservation Commission was drainage in Mudville.  A Certificate of Compliance was approved for DPW work clearing catch basins in Mudville.  The high water in the Winthrop Canal was also discussed.  Conservation Agent, Ryan Clapp, reported that the Mosquito Control Authority is contacting canal abutters regarding plans to remove obstructions in the canal.  Mr. Clapp’s research also discovered an article passed at the 2013 Town Meeting authorizing a comprehensive plan be developed.  No funds were approved at that time.  The Conservation Agent will draft a letter, for approval by the commission members, to the Selectmen that would authorize the DPW to recommend actions related to the Winthrop Canal.

Seen above, Jake Heihsel, a Holliston High student has been interning in the Conservation Department.  Mr. Clapp commended Jake’s contributions to date and looks for a few more months of Jake’s service before finishing school.  Not surprisingly Jake is planning to study environmental science at UMass – Lowell.

Two applications for septic system replacement were approved during the Public Hearings section of the meeting.

The Commission next meets on January 22, 2019 at 7:30 pm

Oh What A Night

Judging by the families traveling between Blair Square and Cross Street, this was the best First Night Trail Walk yet. Firepits, ice sculpture, hot cider, hot dogs, snacks, and ice cream greeted the throngs who turned out for the Friends of Holliston Trail's annual gathering. (Publisher's Note: This article is a repost of yesterday's feature since the Cub Publisher pushed the wrong button!)
