January 22, 2019

Holliston’s VFW Post 8507 hosted a “Pizza Party” at the Senior Center to acknowledge the efforts of and thank ten Robert Adams Middle School students who submitted entries to the VFW’s annual Patriot’s Pen youth written essay contest.

The 2018-2019 essay theme is "Why I Honor the American Flag." Approximately 20 students and their family members attended the event, along with 13 VFW members. Taryn Holmes was the first-place winner at the Post-level and was awarded a first-place prize of $300. Stephen Corrou came in second and Reese Holmes and Hannah Devine tied for third. Daniel Barbibeau, Michelle Corrou, Michael Flaven, Megan Monahan, Jordan Munro and Caroline White all received honorable mention awards.

Above, Taryn Holmes reads her winning essay as VFW member Henry Dellicker listens intently.

The national first-place winner will be chosen in March 2019 and will receive a first-place prize of $5,000 in addition to an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.  Post 8507’s Junior Vice-Commander Peter Guelinitz was the chairperson for the contest.

A Walk on the Moon

Two significant historical and personal events coincided/collided for me on Sunday, July 20, 1969. It was my first full day in the Army and an earthling walked on the Moon.
