Selectmen Award New Trash Contract

by Bobby Blair
February 13, 2019

Mike Lavin of the town's Sustainable Waste Management & Recycling Committee presented his committee's finding relative to the town choosing a trash hauler for the ensuing five year beginning July 1st. The choice came down to three in the running, including the town's present collector Republic Services along with Casella and E.L. Harvey. Lavin's group has been hard at work for the past two years sizing up the town's options along with all the variables each company presented with their proposals. Republic Services has come under fire at numerous board meeting during the past year concerning missed collections. The winning bidder was E.L.  Harvey of Westborough. Lavin noted that Harvey would have less distance to haul their trash than several other competitors. Residents will get new trash containers in July for a one stream system.

2 years sure is a long time to "size" things up.

Appreciate the SWMR Committee for their due diligence. E.L. Harvey looks to be a good choice. I noticed in some towns they only collect every other week. Are we contracting with them for weekly pickup or will our contract also be for every other week?

If we will be receiving new containers, will we be able to "throw out" our old containers? I am sure many have tried in the past to get rid of old trash cans and have been met with the haulers never taking them away.

will this be at a cost to the citizens and will the trash barrels be big enough to handle a big families trash?

Just curious about bulky pickups- will they still be free or will the residents have to pay for each item based on the posted price list on the EL Harvey website?

One hopes that there is a clause in the contract providing for some kind of financial penalty for recurring missed pickups.
