An Evening with Sustainability Coordinators; April 4

by Press Release
April 1, 2019

You are Invited to An Evening with Sustainability Coordinators

In Town Meeting, May 6th, citizens will have an opportunity to direct the town to hire a part time Sustainability Coordinator.  To learn about the Coordinator role and what it can do for Holliston, please join us on Thursday April 4, 7 PM at the Pine Hill School auditorium, 10 Pine Hill Lane, Sherborn.  Coordinators from four towns in the Greater Boston area will speak about the scope of their role, their experiences, and the return on the town’s investment in their position. Towns have realized, annually, between 4 and 8 times the cost of salary and benefits for the Coordinator Position.

With the reality of climate change becoming increasingly visible, it is clearer than ever that we need to make a rapid transition to a clean energy economy.  The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that we must reduce our carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, and 100% by 2050, in order to avoid the most devastating effects of climate disruption.  Holliston needs to do our part by addressing our carbon footprint.

How can a coordinator help?  Holliston, a green community since 2015, has been working to address climate change, and our town officials have made admirable progress.  However, town employees working on this issue all have big jobs, and cannot realistically dedicate the time and effort needed to shift from incremental to large scale carbon reduction.   A Coordinator’s sole focus is sustainability:  getting grants and incentives for projects, measuring and reporting on progress against our goals, working with residents and businesses, coordinating and collaborating on projects across town departments, and so much more.

Come learn about this important issue on Thursday, April 4, 7 PM at the Pine Hill School, 10 Pine Hill Lane in Sherborn so that you can register an informed vote at our Holliston Town Meeting.
