Energy Tip for Week of May 27, 2019

How to Enjoy Being in Hot Water

Water heating is a major contributor to your total energy consumption. Other than purchasing an energy efficient water heater (see last week’s tip), there are three methods of reducing your water heating expenses: you can simply use less hot water, turn down the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees or less (see your November Energy Tip), or insulate your water heater and the first six feet of hot and cold water pipes.

Insulating your tank and pipes means more heat stays in the water instead of dissipating into the air around it.  The hotter the water, the faster it loses heat to the surrounding environment. Better yet, use all three methods and save more (both money and environment).
