Energy Tip for Week of June 3, 2019

Your Local No Fly Zone

It is that time of year when local farms produce fresh, plentiful produce and meats.  Those strawberries you bought in February (which probably didn’t taste all that great) most likely were flown in from Ecuador or another South American country.  If you buy corn on the cob before our local harvest, it took a train, plane or truck up from Florida or the Carolinas.  That’s a lot of carbon emissions for a little bit of fruit or a cob of corn.

This year, consider a CSA share in a local farm and get tasty, fresh fruit, vegetables and meats that did not need a plane ride to get to you.  Local farms reduce carbon emissions and provide truly fresh food for your table. Even without a farm share (CSA), you can support local farmers by doing your shopping at farm stands or farmer’s markets, of which there are several in the area. When at your supermarket, ask about and purchase locally grown food.
