Walking Fitness Program

NEW—Now Also Available in the Afternoon

Wednesdays 9:30 am—10:30 am; Tuesday & Thursday 4:00 pm—5:00 pm (Beginning July 9th)

This is a free, group-led, in-house walking program that will be run with the use of DVDs in the air-conditioned Senior Center.

Be prepared to work up a sweat while walking in place with different levels of walking.  These programs provide a great cardio workout, brain power, waistline trimming, and overall fitness. 

We ask that you sign up for the afternoon class ahead of time by calling (508) 429-0622.  There is no fee for this class, just show up a little early to get ready to walk!

Habitat for Humanity - Home Repair Program

Office Hours at the Senior Center

July 17th & August 21st

11:00 am—12:00 pm

Tanya Clark from the Habitat for Humanity offices in Worcester will be coming on a monthly basis to meet with people who might qualify for their Home Repair Program.  This program is for low to moderate income homeowners, including Veterans who are struggling to maintain their homes due to age, disability or family circumstances.   Habitat might be able to help with roof repairs, renovations and upgrades to help with accessibility (ie…ramps) and/or deck repair.

NEW TRASH / RECYCLING PROGRAM: Come to the Senior Center to learn more about the new Trash/Recycling Program.

Tuesday, July 9, 2019—10:30

Presented By:  Michael Szczepan, Municipal Manager, E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc.

Two new carts will be delivered to each resident before July 1st.  The trash cart will hold 35 gallons.  Anything that doesn’t fit in the cart must have a two-dollar sticker on it.  The recycling cart will hold 65 gallons.  All recycling can be mixed together in the new bin: paper, bottles, cans and plastic.

New bins are to be used only after July 1st.  Use your old bins and barrels until that date.

Holliston Cable Access Opportunity

Interested in learning a new skill and helping promote some of the wonderful events that happen here at the Senior Center?  Holliston Cable Access Television or HCAT and the Senior Center staff are looking for volunteers to train to use HCAT’s video equipment and be “camera ready” to film activities and events to share with the greater Holliston Community.

“OPERATION VALKYRIE @ 75: THE PLOT TO ASSASSINATE HITLER” 

Wednesday, July 10, 2019—1:00 pm

Join us as we examine the details of the plot to assassinate Hitler.  By 1944, with the Allied landings in France and the collapse of the Eastern Front, conspirators within the German Officer Corps planned a coup to eliminate Hitler and to open negotiations with the West to end to the war.  After careful planning, Col. Claus von Stauffenberg volunteered to place a bomb in Hitler’s conference room timed to explode during his daily military briefing.

Join the staff and volunteers for a fresh grilled burger or hot dog, with cool sides and followed up by a refreshing dessert!

SENIOR CENTER ANNUAL FALL FAIR

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2019

9:00 am—3:00 pm - Rain or Shine

GOODS AND SERVICES NEEDED

We are gearing up for the Annual Fall Fair on Saturday, September 7, 2019, sponsored by the Senior Support Foundation.  This is the ONE big fundraiser of the year, and 100% of the proceeds go toward our programs.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!  Beginning on Tuesday, July 9th, bring in your goods on any Tuesday or Thursday in July and August from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm and drop them off to the volunteers near the garage.  Clean out your closets and bring ONLY GENTLY-USED items—No clothing please!

Bookstore—Go through your shelves and bring us your GENTLY-USED books for all ages:  fiction, nonfiction, cooking, or self-help books (NO textbooks).  We also love audio books and large print books.  Please bring books to the Bookstore inside the Center. These may be dropped off anytime throughout the year.

Jewelry—All used jewelry is welcome and can be dropped off to the Receptionist during any hours the Center is open.

Baked Goods—Please let us know if you are willing to bake cookies, cakes, pies or any other delicious items for our bake sale the day of the Fair.  Call and leave your name with the Receptionist. 

Videos and Music—We are collecting DVDs, CDs, Albums and Sheet Music — No VHS.  Drop off at the Bookstore during any hours the Center is open.

Raffle / Silent Auction—We welcome gift cards, gift baskets, goods and services for individuals to bid on at the Auction.  Please drop off donations to Linda Marshall.

Craft Table—We are also collecting handmade crafts (knitting, quilting, etc.)  Please drop off with Linda Marshall.

Linens and Stationery—We need GENTLY-USED linens (blankets, sheets, towels, tablecloths, napkins, decorative pillows, etc.) and boxed stationery, office supplies, etc. Please drop off at the Garage.

Good-As-New Shoppe—We collect used small items (glassware, kitchen items, knick-knacks, etc.) year-round.  Please drop off in the Good-As-New Shoppe or Garage.

Picture Frames—Donations of framed art, pictures, and musical instruments (only items that can fit in a car) can be sold.  Please drop off at the Garage at the Center.

Garage Sale—We take everything from bikes to baskets, glassware to globes, gently-used chairs to china, tables to toys, etc.  Please, we CANNOT take upholstered or large pieces of furniture, No Baby Items with Fabric, Baby Furniture or Car Seats, No large exercise equipment, No TVs, large electronics, or any computers.  If you are interested in donating a large item, please contact Sheila Joslin at (508) 429-7259.

Holliston Senior Center July & August Information

Thank You to Herb Chambers! A very special Thank You goes to Herb Chambers of Westborough for their very generous donation of a new 2018 Ford Escape to be used by the Senior Center and Veterans Services of Holliston. This vehicle will enable both agencies to transport members to appointments that are not normally covered by the existing transportation resources. If you have any questions regarding the transportation program offered through the Senior Center, please contact Marty at (508) 429-0622.
