Cool it with Curtains!

Cool it with Curtains!

It’s Summer, and that means strong sun streaming in your windows.  When the sun hits furniture, rugs or any other household objects, it heats them up.  They then release that heat, increasing the temperature of your inside air.

To minimize solar heat gain in the summer, draw curtains and/or lower shades during the day.  This decreases the amount of solar energy transferred into your house.

You might also consider replacing old, single pane windows, with double pane, gas filled “Low-E” windows.  These windows add insulation while reflecting away much of the summer high angle sunlight.  The windows are especially cost effective if you have air conditioning, lowering the amount of energy needed to keep your house comfortable.
