MA Cultural Attractions for Your Summer Enrichment

What a variety of institutions for this week’s Free Fun Fridays, courtesy of the Highland Street Foundation.  Will it be the Shark Center in Chatham, a Tanglewood visit, or the Volleyball Hall of Fame? Or another of the 10 weekly offerings?  Select a favorite, or try some place you’ve never been.

August 2

Franklin Park Zoo  https://www.zoonewengland.org/engage/free-fun-friday-at-franklin-park-zoo/

“Hundreds of exotic animals from around the world.

Climb over, under around and through our 10,000-square-foot playground!”

Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood  https://www.bso.org/brands/tanglewood/tickets-events.aspx

“ENJOY A FUN AFTERNOON AT TANGLEWOOD WITH ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
An afternoon of free performances and family-friendly activities presented by cultural organizations from around Berkshire County.

Friday, August 2, 2019 3pm-6pm

If you are attending the Family Fun Fest activities being offered from 3-6pm, we invite you to stay on the lawn for the 8pm evening BSO performance.  You are welcome to bring food and beverages and enjoy a picnic on the lawn with your family.

Reservations are requested for the family activities, but not required. Anyone arriving after the activities will be required to purchase regular lawn tickets.”

Chatham Shark Center  https://www.atlanticwhiteshark.org/visit-our-chatham-shark-center

“The Chatham Shark Center offers an in-depth look at one of the ocean’s most magnificent and misunderstood species: the great white shark!  Through interactive exhibits, videos, displays, ad virtual reality experiences, the Center offers many ways to learn about groundbreaking research and one of Cape Cod’s most captivating summer residents.

The Chatham Shark Center will have free admission to all visitors on Friday, August 2, 2019 as part of the program. This program was created to increase access and enrichment opportunities for children and families throughout Massachusetts during the summer months.”

Children’s Museum at Holyoke  https://www.childrensmuseumholyoke.org/

“The Children’s Museum at Holyoke is dedicated to its mission to enhance the educational and cultural awareness of all children through the arts, the sciences, and the world around them. The Museum features participatory exhibits that invite interaction and programs which promote learning and self-discovery.

“Parents and adults who accompany children to the Museum are strongly encouraged to participate in the exhibits and have fun and enjoy the amazement through the little ones eyes.”

Concord Museum  https://concordmuseum.org/

“The Concord Museum in historic Concord, Massachusetts houses one of the oldest and most treasured collections of Americana in the country. Come visit the gateway to Concord’s remarkable revolutionary and literary history.

Thanks to the generosity of the Highland Street Foundation, the Concord Museum is open FREE all day from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Experience Concord’s history through object-based and hands-on activities.  All activities are on a first come, first served basis and will run rain or shine.  See website for schedule of events."

International Volleyball Hall of Fame  https://www.volleyhall.org/

“A total of 130 men and women from 22 countries around the world have since been inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame. The international appeal of the sport explains a shift in the pool of inductees since 1998. Since that time, inductees have come from around the world and contribute to the honoring of the sport and its home in Holyoke.

The International Volleyball Hall of Fame provides the opportunity to bring people from different cultures and different parts of the world together to celebrate the sport.”

Lynn Museum  http://lynnmuseum.org/

“Originally located in a residential building on Green Street, the Museum is now housed in the former Heritage State Park Visitor Center, a unique loft space that reflects the city’s industrial past. Its new home is the ideal setting for the Museum to display its extensive collection of fine art, photography, furniture, textiles, ephemera, archival materials and other authentic artifacts through innovative changing exhibitions. Steeped in Lynn’s rich heritage, the Museum tells the compelling stories of manufacturing, industry, labor, abolitionism, women’s rights and more that have shaped our nation.”

Museum of Russian Icons  https://www.museumofrussianicons.org/

The Museum is housed in a 150-year-old former mill building. A contemporary, aluminum-clad addition to the mill building accommodating the South Gallery, Library and offices was completed in 2008. The adjacent 150-year-old former courthouse and police station with holding cells was acquired in 2010 and renovated to provide additional gallery space, a terrace with a green roof, a tea room, and performance facilities accommodating lectures and concerts. Three floors of galleries display the permanent collection. A dedicated gallery features special exhibitions ranging from contemporary Russian art to icons from other Orthodox cultures. It is the only museum in the USA dedicated to Russian icons, and the largest collection of icons outside of Russia.”

Naumkeag, the Trustees  http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/berkshires/naumkeag.html

“What makes Naumkeag a special place?

With its gracious house, magnificent gardens, and panoramic views, Naumkeag is a quintessential country estate of the Gilded Age.

This architectural masterpiece is, at its heart, a family home. Joseph Choate, a leading 19th-century attorney, hired the architectural firm of McKim, Mead, & White to design the 44-room “cottage,” Naumkeag, which would serve as a summer retreat for three generations of Choates.

“Join us for this Free Fun Friday at Naumkeag! The property will be open for free to everyone and there will be special activities happening through out the day for all ages. Come create art from flowers, tour the house, play lawn games and explore the gardens. Concessions available.”

Old State House  https://www.bostonhistory.org/

“Visit this important historical site, experience the exhibits, and interact with Revolutionary Characters, who will share what it was like to live in Boston in the exciting days leading up to the American Revolution.  We hope you'll join us on August 2, from 9 AM to 6 PM for free admission, free history, and free fun!”

Be sure to check the website or call each destination for special events planned for Free Fun Fridays.  Many have special concerts, programs, and exhibits for the day.

Also remember that Free Fun Fridays! include admission to the institution.  Parking and/or transportation are not included.

Have a wonderful time!
