
Irene Visits Holliston

It didn't take long for Hurricane Irene to start racking up damage in town

Just after 8 a.m. a tree was reported down somewhere on Prentice Street between Bonney Drive and Marshall Street along with utility wires. Around 8:15 a.m. my computer shut down briefly. Little did I realize that the culprit was just doors away at 94 Union Street.

Ironically home owner Denise Hogue told HollistonReporter that she had moved both cars which were damaged by a fallen tree from the driveway to the right side of the home where a huge tree stands next to the driveway to the left of the house where she felt the cars would be safer. The Hogue's lost their utilities due to the fallen tree.

It didn't take long before yet another tree limb fell in Mudville, this time next door at 45 School Street. The large limb fell across Mechanic Street and onto a car behind 44 Spring Street smashing through a car windshield.
10:08 a.m. - Two trees are reported down on Winter Street near Francine Drive. A tree is blocking Courtland Street near Pondview. Traffic is down to one lane on Highland Street near Prentice due to a reported downed tree. Wires are down near Marked Tree Road and Smithurst Drive with loss of power to Smithurst Drive. A Holliston police cruiser was struck by fallen branches.
10:15 a.m. A house is struck at 242 Hollis Street by a fallen tree. The road is blocked at Mill Street and Country Road due to a fallen tree. Tree down at 158 Westfield but is not blocking the road.
10:22 a.m. Additional Aux. Police Officers called in for duty. Roadway flooded in front of 59 Hollis (Cutler School); officer trying to unblock drain.

10:40 a.m. - Report of a tree striking a house at 119 Hanlon Road; also branches hitting wires near 115 Hanlon which are sparking. Wires down near Winter and Ashland Streets. A tree fell on a house at 11 Fruit Street with all wires downed. Norfolk at Franklin down to one lane due to downed wires.
The limb pulled the electrical connection off the house at 11 Fruit Street.
The culvert under Charles Street is at capacity at 11:00 AM. 11:11 a.m. - Stoneybrook Drive blocked at both ends due to downed trees. 11:13 a.m. - Highland Street near Ashland line now passable; north bound lane still blocked. 11:16 a.m. - report of a tree fallen onto a utility pole on Dunster Road.

Tree down at 46 Norland, resting on wires; Nstar notified --neighborhood still has power.
Irene took up where the DPW left off at Goodwill Park.
Irene has given Holliston's new Dam Safety Officer, civil engineer Karen Fung, something to be concerned about at Factory Pond on Woodland Street.
Highway Department crews cleared this downed tree from Washington Street near Linden Street.
A close call here on Washington Street at the opposite corner of Linden Street.
Norfolk Street residences were hit hard.
Norfolk Street was closed to traffic for a while.
Home on Winthrop Street damaged.
This tree fell between residences on Central Street.
