Name This Park

by Bobby Blair 5/25/12

Here's your chance to name a park...

Selectmen Monday night asked residents to help them name the new park on the rail trail adjacent to CVS Pharmacy and Winthrop Street. Suggestions may be made to the Selectmen's Office at 703 Washington Street or you may make a suggested name on the comment section below.

The park has recently been planted with grass seed, and flowers have been planted in three of the four raised beds. A list of suggested names will be read at the next meeting of the Board of Selectmen.

The park should be named in honor of Bobby Blair who has given so much of his time and love to the town of Holliston.

Blair Junction or Mudville Junction. Junction being a common name for a place/area/crossroads in Ireland.
- Sandy Mack | 5/30/12 4:54 PM
Yes, Holliston Volunteer Park with Blair's Way running through it (with road signs like the ones in the Mayor's side yard - to all the other volunteer projects he cares about: Downtown Marigold, Pantry Shelf, Dahlia Farm, Mudville memorabilia, veterans memorial at the town hall, flower stand at his house, etc etc etc), with a bench for Robert Weidnecht, who started the project right out of high school, and who may want to sit down and rest a bit when it's finally finished.

Well, it seems to be unanimous, Bobby Blair has been re-elected as Mayor! - on a somewhat more serious note, perhaps name the park, "Veterans Memorial Park" and the road that runs through it, "Blair's Way"
- Lee DeSorgher | 5/30/12 12:51 PM
I agree with honoring Bobby for all his devotion and service to the town. Blair Commons or Blair Park is nice.
- Cathy Stenquist | 5/30/12 10:47 AM
After seeing the various suggestions for park names and the reasoning behind them, I believe that some version of a name that reflects the spirit of volunteerism in town is appropriate. Certainly many, although not all, of our veterans volunteered to serve. In the documentary on the Mayor, his life has cleary been driven by public/volunteer service. The trail itself, of which the park is a part, was completely driven by volunteers. We also have so many other examples of volunteer efforts in town - firefighters, auxiliary police, endless charitable fundraisers (Cycle for Haylee, Breast Cancer Walk, etc.), youth sports coaches, religious organizations, town committee people, the veterans remembrance signs, Holliston Pantry Shelf, and the list goes on and on. The volunteer spirit of Holliston is unique and it is perhaps the primary reason why our family found Holliston 20 years ago and chose to stay. I think Bobby Blair is the embodyment of this ethic. I would nominate the name of "Volunteer Park" with a special plaque dedicated to Mayor Bobby and the people of Holliston who he most capably represents.

After attending the Memorial Day services today, I realize that Holliston's Veterans Memorial is in front of Town Hall.
- Ann Talbot | 5/28/12 11:56 PM
The name of this park should be Holliston's Veterans Memorial Park.
- Tina | 5/28/12 4:25 PM
Blair Veteran Memorial Park - A fitting and loving tribute to one man's loyal service to his community and his country.
- sarah commerford | 5/28/12 9:29 AM
Having grown up on Prospect Street with the honorable Bobby Blair, I do beleive it fitting that this man who gives with his heart. be recognized for all his hard work and dedication to Holliston. My vote is for Volunteer Park and that the day of the dedication of the park that a bench be dedicated in Bobby's name.

Bobby Blair is definitely deserving to have the park named after him, however, recognizing how important America's Veterans are to him,I think naming the park "Veterans Memorial Park" is appropriate.
- Ralph Stover | 5/27/12 9:27 PM
Bobby Blair does so much for us! It should definitely be named in his honor. I understand that he is very humble and that is one of his great qualities but he deserves this! We all know him as the mayor so I suggest something with MAYOR in the name so that we are honoring him in a not-so-obvious way! Thank you Mayor Blair!

"Roberts Crossing"
- Another One | 5/27/12 6:22 PM
I think the name of the part should be Holliston Veterans Memorial Park.
- Cynthia Riordan | 5/27/12 12:54 PM
I think the park should be called "Bobby Blair Park" and be dedicated to the veterans and volunteers that make Holliston a great place. A bench with Robert Weidnecht should be included. I am proud of what my brother has done in making Holliston more beautiful and what he has done for the community spirit. Not that I'm partial but its his spark that keeps the spirit of volunteering going.
- terry driscoll | 5/27/12 9:30 AM
I think Blair Square sounds great. Bobby is a staple of Holliston and should defiantly be honored this way. Or even Robert Blair Park. He's put most of this Bloom across America into motion and the town will look beautiful....more beautiful. Thanks Bobby!
- kmc | 5/27/12 8:30 AM
"Blair Square"
- Kevin Conley | 5/27/12 7:37 AM
"Mayor Blair Park" with a bench or plack with Robert Weidnecht's name with his devotion to the project.
- Deb Moore | 5/27/12 7:07 AM
Robert Weidnecht does deserve recognition! Let's put something in stone for him (a bench where a weary traveler can rest?) as a lasting tribute. But Bobby Blair - I hope he won't persist in rejecting the well-intended thanks of his hometown. Maybe he could accept just the last name, Blair, since it's a town-family name? I can already hear it, "meetcha down at Blair Pahk aftah school/work/the meeting/the game"....
- Mudvillian | 5/26/12 6:38 PM
We have ALL contributed to this, my Birthplace, Town of Holliston!! Yet, Bobby Blair has given and done more for this town than anyone, POLITICS aside!! When you bring your family and friends through "our" streets for "family events"...it is his efforts that make US stand-out beyond our other Route 16/Route 126 Neighbors!! All towns/cities have great people who help, but Bobby's help is BOTH VISUAL and SILENT!! From "The Depot" to "Mudville"..."The Blair Breezeway"!!
- Mary-Caryl Shannahan Ferdenzi | 5/26/12 6:32 PM
Bobby Blair has done amazing things for this town. I tried to take a photo of him weeding downtown the other day because he is rarely pictured in the many photos on Hollistonreporter.com. But, he didn't want the photo to be taken and I'm not surprised he rejected the idea of having the park named after him. I love Mary Greendale's idea of naming it Volunteer Park. It is very fitting.
- Susan Heavner | 5/26/12 6:25 PM
It should be named for Bob Blair because it was his grandmothers uncle who owned the property known as FAIR GRAIN. He lived on Union St. and lets keep a little bit of Holliston HISTORY alive. Bob is a very special GIFT to Holliston.
- D. Robbins | 5/26/12 4:55 PM
With all due respect to Bobby, I think even the Mayor would prefer the "Holliston Veterans Memorial Park. He has not toiled for fame, he has given of himself for the Veterans in town as well as the general population. Snowy
- Snowy | 5/26/12 4:37 PM
Bobby surely deserves recognition of his many contributions, but he rejected that idea when I asked him. Robert Weidnecht deserves recogntion, too, because the trail would not be there had it not been for his determination and persistence. He dismissed the idea, too. And that made me think that this town's greatest gift is it volunteers - whether they run Celebrate Holliston or Newcomers, give time at the library or volunteer to be a town official; from the Lions to the Pantry Shelf, Scouts and religious organizations, volunteers make this town go 'round. Rather than single out one person, I suggest we call it Volunteer Park in honor of the thousands of people who have served this town in its long history.
- Mary Greendale | 5/26/12 4:05 PM
Sorry to make you blush, Bobby. I cast another vote to name it honor of hizzoner. You're tireless in all you do for our town.
- Nancy Baron | 5/26/12 2:53 PM
Without question...Bobby Blair Park. If it weren't for his hard work and creativity, the entire area would still be a MESS Thanks for all you do, Bobby
- Pat Duffey | 5/26/12 1:37 PM
Without a doubt it should be " Robert Blair Park".
- Pete Vernon | 5/26/12 12:52 PM
Blair Park or Blair('s) Common
- HollRes | 5/26/12 12:21 PM
I'm in agreement that the park should be dedicated to Bobby Blair. He's at the heart of our community, and he's already been shaping this new green space at the heart of our town. Look at the food pantry, the signs for soldiers, the downtown marigold project, the dahlia farm, the remembrance of veterans, the Mudville block parties, the candles, soap(!) and stoneware, the little flower/vegetable stand with the honor jar, the memorials to Irish forebears and Casey at the bat, and who knows how many other anonymous services: people who pass through Holliston on the rail-trail should know that the name "Blair" is central to the character of our town.
- Susan | 5/26/12 11:36 AM
My vote is for "Blair Park".
- Kristin | 5/26/12 10:52 AM
How about "The Mayor's Park"
- Peter Jackson | 5/26/12 10:02 AM
I totally agree that it should be named for Bobby Blair. "The Blair Breezeway" - the stretch of park leading to The Mayor's beloved Mudville.
- Mary-Caryl Shannahan Ferdenzi | 5/26/12 9:29 AM
Having grown up on Winthrop St., of course I'm partial. I'm thinking "Winthrop Park" would be the ideal name. However, Bob Blair deserves the honor for his many efforts to beautify the Town, so I suggest "Blair Park."
- Shirley (Hamlet) Chipman | 5/26/12 9:20 AM
No disrespect meant to the Mayor, however I would propose that it be named "Holliston Veterans Memorial Park.
- Steve Bradford | 5/26/12 8:14 AM
I agree with Michelle. Maybe call it Blair Greenway.
- Lorraine Krauss | 5/26/12 7:57 AM
I'm not sure if the exact name, but you (Bobby Blair) have done so much for Holliston, especially to beautify it, that I think the park should be named for you.
