by Bill Tobin 6/23/12

The Holliston Lions Club is sponsoring their 50th annual Carnival this week which is a

major fund raiser for the Lions,  but what do they do with the money they raise to help the Town of Holliston?  The 2011-12 to date donations to local charities total $48,000.

The local Lions Club was established in 1941, and has served the community since then in many ways.

The club has over 100 members (one of the largest in District 33K) made up of people from around the Holliston area who enjoy giving back to the community, and do just that through the Lions.  The members give their time as they are able, and are motivated by friendship and camaraderie for one another.  And they do have a lot of fun.

Some of the events sponsored by the Lions, in addition to the carnival include Breakfast with Santa, Downtown Christmas Lighting, Operation Mitten, Senior Citizens Cookout, Toll Road White Cane Drive, Veteran's Day Luncheon, $10,000 Raffle, Adopt-a-Highway, Peace Poster Contest, Eye Mobile, and Triathlon.

As of this date, the Holliston Lions Club has donated $61,000 to charities and causes, with $48,000 dedicated to local community charities.

These are examples of the donations:

2012 Student Scholarships-$10,000

Holliston Fire Department-$1,700

Holliston America in Bloom-$3,850

Athletic Booster Association-$5,750

Police K-9 Unit-$2,000

Arts Council- $1,000

Food Pantry-$2,000

Holliston High and Sports,-$4,050

Miller School Playground-$2,500

Rails to Trails-$1,500

Auxiliary Police-$820

Police Department-$1,900

Friends of Library-$500

Ramp for Holliston resident-$600

Project Just Because-$1,000

And many more local causes.

In addition to financial support, Lions Club members donate their time to help where needed, such as Rail Trail clean-up, assisting resident with yard work, converting storm and screen sash, as well as staff events like the carnival, Santa's Breakfast, Celebrate Holliston and wherever their services are requested.  Member also bring donations for the Food Pantry to the Lions monthly meeting. The motto "We Serve" is reality.

Membership in the Lions Club is by invitation. They are looking for civic-minded men and women who live in and around Holliston who are willing to give of themselves. The rewards of making a commitment are the great fellowship and satisfaction that come from helping others.  Members pay dues as 100% of the funds raised go to the charities.

The Lions have generously donated a "Welcome to Holliston" sign that will be installed just as you enter from Sherborn in East Holliston. Mark Ahronian donated the difference between the cost and the Lions' gift. The back of this sign will display the Lions' logo in acknowledgement of their generosity. Perhaps in future years, other organizations can add signs at other entrances and can get public recognition, too. The sign will look like those at the Town Hall, Library etc. but are one-sided. Thanks to Andy Porter for presenting the idea to the Lions' Board, to the Board-members and to Mark Ahronian. The sign was timed for judging of America in Bloom but it will stand as testament to the generosity of this organization for many, many years to come. Thank you again. Holliston is a better community for the efforts of all the Lions and Leos.
