Environmental Help Desk Tip for Week of November 25, 2019

Unoccupied Spaces Don’t Need Light

Sometimes the simplest energy saving solutions are the best solutions. Turn off the lights when they’re not in use.

If you want to light an area you may pass through, use rheostats to lower the lighting level and save energy.  If you have a smart home, be sure to set up the lighting pattern to avoid lighting areas not in use.  You can also install motion sensitive light switches that automatically turn off lights when a room is unoccupied for a period of time.

Lighting accounts for about 12% of a typical residential utility bill.
