Quilts – An Expression of Self

If you’ve ever seen quilts with striking colors and patterns, they are truly an art form. But, skills in this craft are only part of the story.  A creative eye for color and interesting fabrics are the elements of expression that make each quilt unique.  Sound like a gallery walk at an art museum?

Being among these fine quilts hanging on the walls of a restored barn IS a gallery walk to be enjoyed. Actually, I’m with my neighbor Becky MacDonald in her barn/family room. Just ask her anything about quilting, and you will be off on an interesting adventure into the world of QUILTS.

Quilting had its origin centuries ago as a way to make clothing and bed linens interesting yet practical.  During the Civil War, quilts raised funds to support the troops. Quilts were even designed with secret patterns signaling “safe houses” as part of the Underground Railroad, helping former slaves moving North.

Becky got her start by learning to sew with her mom, as she first opened the doors of possibility of things to come.  Becky was attracted by vibrant colors, style and interesting fabrics for sewing projects.  This led her to quilting.  These expressive murals became a thrilling pastime, taking on particular meaning when gifted to friends and family on special occasions.

Becky shares and displays her quilts at Marathon Quilters Guild, Hopkinton, and at Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fairs, receiving acclaim for her artistry. Making quilts for causes–Charity Quilts and Refugee Minors–gives quilting a higher calling.

Enjoying the visualizing, planning and construction of quilts draws friends and family to see what project will be next.  Surely, Becky reminded me, her quilts are to be enjoyed the most when you wrap yourself in a comforting quilt and relax.  Sounds ideal…When do I get my quilt?
