Holliston Energy Program Enhancements

Price stability and a significant increase in the amount of renewable energy the community uses to power their homes and businesses were two goals the Town of Holliston had when it requested bids for its energy program. Those goals have now been realized.

Beginning with the December 2020 meter reads, the Holliston Community Choice Power Supply Program aggregation will have a new supplier, NextEra Energy Services. The Town of Holliston signed a thirty-six-month contract with a new rate that is 9% lower than the previous contract. The Program rate will be $0.10331 per kWh and uses 100 percent green energy which is derived from National Wind renewable energy certificates.

“Residents have expressed concerns about the instability of the energy market and a strong desire to use more clean energy.” said John Cronin, Chairman of the Holliston Select Board. “With the lower rate and increased use of renewable energy, the Holliston Community Choice program responds to both of those concerns.”

No action is required by individual consumers. All accounts currently enrolled in the Program will be switched to NextEra Energy Services as of the December 2020 meter reads. This reduced rate will be noted on the December 2020 bills and will be seen on the January 2021 bills.

There are no enrollment, early termination, or cancellation fees attached to the Holliston electricity program. Residents who choose to opt-out can also opt-in at a later date if they so choose at no cost. However, anyone switching from a contract with a third-party supplier may be subject to penalties or early termination fees charged by that supplier. Ratepayers should verify terms before switching.

Basic Service rates change twice a year or more, depending on rate class, with Eversource recently announcing their proposed winter residential Basic Service Supply rate as $0.11882 per kWh. As a result, the aggregation rate may not always be lower than the Basic Service rate. The goal of the aggregation is to deliver savings over the life of the program against Eversource Basic Service. However, such savings and future savings cannot be guaranteed.

Congratulations to the Select Board, TA and our Sustainability Coordinator for their help and support to implement this new aggregation program for the residents of Holliston. We will save money and move from the minimal amount of renewables required by law to 100% renewables. These are important steps that are being made towards heading to Net Zero.

Bravo Town of Holliston for moving forward with green energy & creating a financial & environmental win-win. Job well done, especially with rising electricity costs. Nice to see something bring those costs down for a change! Thank you from your residents & our planet.
