H.H.S. Students Learn Through Service

On Thursday evening, HHS students enrolled in the 2020-2021 Service Learning class got to highlight their work and their learning. Like most everything, this event moved to a virtual format.

HHS Social Studies / History teacher Kaitlin Mills (below) welcomed nearly 100 people to the on-line showcase.

Mills shared that this is the second year the class has been offered. Enrollment rose to 46 students this year which created two sections of the program. The 46 students worked on 16 different community-focused needs. Key to the program is that the students conduct research to identify the needs and then set about creating a service to meet that need.

The projects focused on mental health, social justice, food insecurity, the environment, and physical health and well-being. Some projects raised funds to support existing charities in the greater-Boston area. The ‘Openly Struggling’ project group focused on mental health and raised $500 to donate to Holliston Youth & Family Services.

I was inspired by these young citizens who showed that they are part of something bigger than themselves and are eager to make a positive difference in our world.
