Week #3: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 5/1)

Week 3:

In a mild upset, Lions edged Hood, 8-6 behind 3 hits and 4 RBIs from legend, Ernie ‘The Hit Man’ Tomacelli.

An 8-run 2nd (all with 2 outs) propelled Jasper Rock over Downtown, 12-6 as 3B Doug Herman went 3-4 and 1B Neil Kuchman went 4-4.   LF Tom Dumas robbed Downtown’s John Drohan of an extra base hit with a phenomenal diving catch that required the league Concussion Protocol to be used on the outfielder.  League physician Nikolas Van Helsing cleared Dumas for play, so all is well in the Jasper clubhouse.

Mudville’s Steve Miller went 22-29 for 344 yds and 4 TD’s as Mudville nipped Brentwood, 37-2.  Yes, 37-2.  Seems the absence of skipper, Eric Kuharich was a welcome sight to the Mudville squad as the put up a historic offensive performance.  Last week Kuharich played, zero runs, this week no Kuharich, 37 runs.  Coincidence, I think not.  Veteran 1B Errick Spada was 6-6 with a grand slam in the 3rd and finished with 12 RBI on the night while OF Eric Higgins went 5-6 with 7 RBIs in the lop-sided win.  No word yet if Brentwood will continue with their season or just forfeit the balance of the schedule.

Last known photo of the scoreboard before it short-circuited and went up in flames in a 12-run 4th for Mudville.

Johnson North pounded new-look QueenZ, 20-4.  That’s it.  That’s all I have.  Need feedback from these squads in order to produce a game summary.

Dalton Rd walked-off Anthony’s, 16-15 behind newcomer, OF Mitch Cotto’s 2 HR homer in the bottom of the 7th.  Anthony’s jump out quickly with an 8-run first behind 2B Dan Higgins and OF Mike Delprete who each had 2 hits in the inning while some sloppy Dalton defense helped their cause as well.  Dalton clawed back in the middle innings as Anthony’s decided to kick the ball around too and eventually took a 2-run lead into the 7th.  Delprete continued his hot night with a 2-strike, 2-out, 2-run single of off P Dave Birmingham to set up the young Cotto’s heroics in the bottom of the 7th.  Dalton SS Jason ‘the CEO’ Krantz had 3 hits and 3 RBI in his first game back after a yearlong sabbatical in Antarctica pursuing his passion to help save/restore the Southern Rockhopper Penguin population.  Welcome back, Jason and thanks for all you do for those cute little fellas!!

South smashed a listless DYR squad, 17-6 as OF Dave Franco and SS Jason Smith each had 4 hits and 4 RBI for the victors.  P Greg Copeland kept the DYR hitters off-balance all night.  South used sun-drenched leftfield to their advantage in the early innings by hitting fly balls to your humble correspondent that I could only hear off the bat and not see.  This tactic allowed the home team to put up 13 runs in the first 2 innings and never look back.  South 2B Steve Lawless had the dubious honor of striking out twice and popping up the catcher.  But to be fair, Steve was battling ‘Michael Jordan-esq flu symptoms’ yet, still showed up to play for his teammates.  (Think Jordan, Willis Reed, Larry Bird, and Paul Pierce-type effort). Not all hero’s wear capes.

It happened 3 more times but, no more pictures…you get the idea

In the game of the week, Braggville clipped Kampersal, 7-4 sparked by 2B Matt Baker’s 2 run double over the left fielder in the 5th extending Braggville’ lead to 3.  Kampersal threatened in the 7th getting the first 2 batters on but, the bottom of the lineup could not come through.  Defensively, 1B Alex Kampersal and 2B Tom Kampersal shined as they turned 2 double plays to keep the game close, but the Champs were too much as RF Rich Cordani also had a good day with 2 doubles and an RBI.

2B Tom Kampersal takes the throw from Cousin Alex to start the ole 3-4-3 double play.

GAME OF THE WEEK for WK #4 (5/8/22)

Dalton Rd(2-0) vs Braggville (2-0): @ Damigella Field @7:30pm

  • Will this early season pressure game be too much for Dalton Rd rookie sensation, Mitch Cotto?
  • Can Braggville P Chris ‘Big Game’ Connors continue to shine in these key matchups??
  • We’ll have a full write up and photos of this game in next week’s write up.
