Library Trustees Conduct Annual Meeting

The Library Trustees met Wednesday, June 1, the Annual Meeting following the Town Election of May 24, when Gwyneth Swain and Kristi Wiwczar were re-elected and Mareourn Yai was elected to the group.  Chair Karla Alfred opened the meeting at 7:05 PM.  An announcement was made that the new Library Director, Deric Wilson, would begin on June 21 and spend two weeks in training alongside retiring Director Leslie McDonnell.  Additionally, the Trustees will meet on June 29, 2022, with both new and former Directors attending.

In Director McDonnell’s COVID update, she stated staff remain masked at this time.  In an update on the grandfather clock (you may remember last month’s report of the search for a clock repair specialist to clean the antique clock) McDonnell identified Classic Clocks of Wayland will do the work.

Both McDonnell and Trustee Kara Peterson attended a recent workshop: “First Amendment AuditsWhat Your Library Board and Staff Need to Know” presented by the Library Board and the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom. Both noted the value of the workshop and spoke briefly about the legality issues concerning filming of government employees.

A bill for $600. from the Massachusetts Municipal Association Job Site was presented to McDonnell for a posting of the Library Directorship position. The position was also posted on the MA Board of Libraries for free.  The Trustees voted to pay the bill with funding from State Aid.

McDonnell made some revisions to the Library “Behavior Policy,” that she shared with the Trustees.   In addition to changing the policy name to “Rules of Conduct,” the group made several edits, updates, changes and amendments and voted to accept the revised document.

In other business:

  • Trustees proceeded to elect officers for the FY2022-23, with Chair Alfred and Vice Chair Peterson reelected to these positions;
  •  Friends of the Library will support a pass to the Davis Family Farm;
  • Renovation of the outdoor bench (front lawn) has been completed;

The Capital Improvement Plan for the Library sent by the Town Administrator Travis Ahern included items completed in FY2021-22 as well as those planned for the years FY2023-27 (see below).  Items planned include the elevator, the HVAC systems, the historic windows, and septic replacement.  McDonnell mentioned another area she would like considered, i.e. the handicap entryway (door and exterior area).

  •  As the Library Trustees do not have a representative to the Envisioning Future Holliston committee, Alfred reported that the Library’s recently completed 5-year plan is a part of EFH’s documentation to inform decisions going forward.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM.  The next meeting of the Trustees is June 29, 2022, at 7PM.
