Week #8: Holliston Senior Softball Wrap-Up: (thru 6/5)

Week 8:

Defense was the name of the game again for Kampersal as they took down Anthony’s East, 10-3SS Josh “Ozzy’ Jolicoeur and 3B Tim Swift took away numerous hits from Anthony’s hitters with range never seen before in HSS.  1B Bryn ‘the ageless wonder’ Smith robbed Anthony’s slugger Ben Pratt of extra bases in the 4th with a diving stab down the line while OF Brad Rowe also sparkled with the leather with 8 overall put-outs and made a sliding catch to deny slumping P Chris Landers of a hit in the 5th.   Kampersal broke it open w a 5-run 4th behind a clutch 2-out 3-run double by 3B Keith Carlton.  Interesting play int 3rd: Anthony’s LF Mike DelPrete on first and ground ball hit to 1B Bryn Smith going to his right.  Instead of flipping it to 2nd for the force, Smith continues to run next to DelPrete the whole 60’and just beat him for the force at 2nd proving that DelPrete now is in the discussion for slowest player in the league!

Mudville jumped all over Queens KingZ, 16-3 behind the bat of 2B Eric Higgins who went 5-5 with 6 RBI while 70’s rocker P Steve Miller shined in the circle keeping undermanned KingZ off balance all night.  Interesting strategy by Kingz to go with 4 OF’s and no catcher with the thought being to get outs in the outfield as normal but, their failure to cover home hurt them repeatedly as Mudville scored 6 runs with no one covering the plate.

In the game of the week, Braggville, for the 6th straight time, took down South, 19-12.

South starting P Bryan Sweeney was ineffective early giving up 12 runs in 2 innings before he replaced himself with Greg Copeland who minimized any further big innings to allow his team to creep back into this one.  OF Rich Cordani led the charge for Braggville going 4-5 including a 3-run blast in the 1st to get the scoring started and fellow OF Dan Kittredge had a 4-hit night as well.  South had a mild threat going in the 5th when Sweeney (2 hits on the night already) stepped into the box but popped out the catcher to end the inning and sending him into a state of depression.

Seems like Sweeney is taking the loss to Braggville well and is poised for a bounce back performance next week versus Kampersal in another huge game for his squad.

Brentwood clipped Lions, 9-6.  That’s it, that’s all I have….

DYR pounded Downtown, 24-9 behind OF Doug Reeley who went 5-6 (HR and Triple) with 6 RBI while RF Ken Szajda’s 4 hits and 3 RBI.  A 12-run second sucked the life out Downtown and they played the rest of the game in virtual silence.  OF Scott Burke was the lone bright spot for the loser’s going 4-4 from his leadoff spot.  Headed for ‘B’ division in ’23, this team needs a visit from the fun police and an injection of enthusiasm from the top down.  It’s Sunday night beer league softball, for the love of Pete, (who’s Pete?) and they play like they’re under a communist regime.  Just this reporter’s 2 cents…

In a game that will surely shake up the ‘A’ standings and relegation scenarios, Jasper Rock edged Dalton Rd, 15-11 as 3B Doug Herman and C Greg Williams each had 2 doubles and 4 RBI.  Seems Dalton had some trouble defensively as they made 11 total errors with 5 in the 4th allowing Jasper to plate 10 runs with every Jasper player contributing a hit except P Derek Cordon who managed to make 2 outs in the inning.  Impressive, Commish.

Johnson North took down The Hood, 17-10 behind the 5-5 performance of 3B Lindsay Chapman.  For the second week in a row, Dave Lyskowski went yard with a bomb in the 2nd while SS Chris King and OF Leo Downing hit HR’s of their own to pace Johnson and chase Hood starter, P Shawn Peters from the game.  Johnson OF Jarrad Jordon again put on a defensive clinic with 10 putouts while going 3-4 at the plate.
