Holliston Police Department Monthly Update: May and June 2022

Personnel Highlights:

  • During the month of May, all department members reviewed Policy 3.06 “Protective Custody” and 3.07 “Foot Pursuit.”
  • During the month of May, all full-time officers completed their mandatory in-service training courses which covered the following topics:
    • “Responding to Emergencies Involving Mentally Ill (3 hours),”
    • “Responding to Mass Gathering and Cultural Competency (3 hours),” and
    • “De-Escalation and Use of Force (3 hours).”
  • During the month of May, all full-time officers completed their semi-annual firearms training and pistol qualification course at the Hopkinton Sportsmen’s Association.
  • On May 1, 2022, Officer John Scanlon retired from the Holliston Police Department after serving the Holliston community for over 36 years.
  • On May 2, 2022, Sergeant Belson attended a one-day training seminar entitled “Contemporary Issues in Securing Your House of Worship” at the Bank of Canton.
  • On May 4, 2022, Lieutenant Thompson and Sergeant Waugh assisted the Human Resource Department with an interview for the position of per-diem dispatcher.
  • On May 9 – 12, 2022, Dispatchers Brown and Moscillo attended a four (4) day “Police Matron Certification” course at the Reading Police Department.
  • On May 9, 2022, Officer Ciavarra attended a half-day training seminar entitled “Response to Active Shooter and Hostile Events” via Zoom.
  • On May 9, 2022, Sergeant Andrew MacGray reached twenty (20) years of service with the Holliston Police Department.
  • On May 10, 2022, Lieutenant Thompson attended a one-day “Firearms Licensing and Vehicle Pursuits” training seminar as part of a 10-week Executive Development training program.
  • On May 10 – 11, 2022, School Resource Officer Digiorgio, School Resource Officer Woods, and Officer Keefe attended the “16th Annual New England School Safety Conference” in Norwood, MA. This two-day conference was sponsored by the Massachusetts Juvenile Police Officers Association.
  • On May 10 – 11, 2022, Sergeant Belson attended a two-day training seminar entitled “Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs: Contact to Conviction” at the Laconia, NH Police Department.
  • On May 11, 2022, Sergeant Waugh attended a half-day training seminar entitled “Response to Active Shooter and Hostile Events” via Zoom.
  • On May 13, 2022, Officers Parent and Hulme assisted the Plymouth Police Academy’s 72nd ROC by acting as role players during a variety of scenario-based training exercises.
  • On May 14, 2022, Sergeant Remkus completed half-day training courses entitled via Zoom:
    • “Response to Active Shooter and Hostile Events”
    • “Officer Wellness”
  • On May 16 – 17, 2022, School Resource Officer Digiorgio and Officer Keefe attended a two-training seminar entitled “The Adolescent Mental Health Training for School Resource Officers and Educators” at Westfield State University. This training was sponsored by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO).
  • On May 16 – 17, 2022, Officers Grace and Ciavarra assisted the Plymouth Police Academy’s 72nd ROC by acting as role players during a variety of scenario-based training exercises.
  • On May 18, 2022, Officer Todd Hagan reached nineteen (19) years of service with the Holliston Police Department.
  • On May 19, 2022, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Thompson, Sergeant Waugh, Officer Parent, Officer Keefe, and Dispatcher Ray participated in the first working group meeting for the police department’s 5-year strategic plan.
  • On May 23 – 25, 2022, Sergeant Remkus attended a three-day “Rifle Instructors Course” at the Randolph Police Academy.
  • On May 25, 2022, Sergeant MacGray attended a one-day “Firearms Legal Update” webinar via Zoom.
  • On May 26, 2022, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Thompson, Sergeant Waugh, Sergeant Hagan, Officer Parent, and Dispatcher Ray participated in the second working group meeting for the police department’s 5-year strategic plan.
  • During the month of May, Sergeant/K-9 Hagan and K-9 Mattis completed their mandatory 16 hours of in-service training with the Boston Police K-9 Unit.
  • During the month of June, all department members reviewed Policy 3.09 “Restraint Chair.”
  • During the month of June, all full-time officers completed their mandatory in-service training courses which covered the falling topics; “De-escalation and Use of Force” and “Electronic Controlled Weapons (ECW).”
  • On June 2, 2022, our third of five Strategic Plan Small Working Group meetings took place in John Johnson training room.
  • On June 4, 2022, Dispatcher Liana Lodola reached four (4) years of service with the Holliston Police Department.
  • On June 8, 2022, Lieutenant Thompson, Detective Maguire, and Officer Griffith attended a “Drug Destruction” information session hosted by the Massachusetts State Police Narcotics Inspection Unit at the State Police headquarters in Framingham, MA.
  • On June 8, 2022, Chief Stone and Officer DiGiorgio attended the School Safety and Security meeting at HPS Central Office.
  • On June 9, 2022, our fourth of five Strategic Plan Small Working Group meetings took place in John Johnson training room.
  • On June 13 – 17, 2022, Sergeant Hagan attended a forty-hour “FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute” course at the MPTC Training Headquarters in Randolph, MA.
  • On June 15, 2022, our final Strategic Plan Small Working Group meetings took place in John Johnson training room.
  • On June 21, 2022, our final Strategic Plan Meeting was held in the John Johnson training room.
  • On June 22, 2022, Detective Maguire and Officer Parent attended the Jail Diversion Program Operations meeting in the John Johnson training room.
  • On June 23, 2022, Sergeant MacGray attended a one-day “Street-Level Firearms Enforcement” seminar in Southbridge, MA.
  • On June 30, 2022, several members of the Holliston Police Department participated in a multi-agency firearms/use of force training event in Medway, MA. The Towns of Holliston, Millis, Medway, and Sherborn all participated in this collaborative training event.
  • During the month of June, Sergeant/K-9 Hagan and K-9 Mattis completed their mandatory 16 hours of in-service training with the Boston Police K-9 Unit.

Community Relations:

  • On May 3, 2022, several members of the police department participated in a “Coffee with a Cop” event at the Holliston Senior Center.
  • On May 4, 2022, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Thompson, Detective Maguire, and School Resource Officer Digiogio participated in the “Safe Routes to School (SRTS) – Walk to School Day” event with parents and students from the Placentino, Miller, and Adams Middle School. SRTS programs engage community members, school staff, and administrators, transportation and public health professionals and others to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and roll to school.
  • On May 14, 2022, Chief Stone attended the new Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans’ monument dedication located along the Upper Charles River Rail Trail.
  • On May 16, 2022, several members of the Holliston Police Department participated in a Police Memorial Day ceremony followed by breakfast with fallen Officer John Johnson’s family at the Holliston Historical Society.
  • On May 20, 2022, School Resource Officer DiGiorgio assisted the Holliston High School Class of 2022
  • with their senior prom in Providence, Rhode Island.
  • On May 21, 2022, Officer Coakley, Officer Grace, Officer Parent, and Dispatcher Ray participated in the annual “Touch-a-Truck” event at the Placentino Elementary School. Several pieces of HPD equipment were on display for kids to see and learn about; including our police cruisers, UTV, and police motorcycle.
  • On May 22, 2022, several Holliston Police Officers assisted Holliston High School’s Class of 2022 with their annual senior vehicle parade.
  • On May 24, 2022, the Holliston Police Department assisted the Holliston Town Clerk’s Office during Election Day.
  • On May 25, 2022, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Thompson, and SRO Digiorgio joined the Holliston High School Administrative Team and the members of the Class of 2022 at the during their annual senior barbeque.
  • On May 30, 2022, Chief Stone, Sergeant Waugh, Sergeant Remkus, Officer Woods, and Officer Coakley marched in the Town’s Memorial Day parade.
  • On June 9, 2022, Chief Stone and Sergeant Belson joined Rabbi Mimi and members of her synagogue at Temple Beth Torah for dinner and provided safety training to her staff.
  • On June 11, 2022, Sergeant Remkus participated in the 2022 Cruiser Convoy into Boston to help support the Special Olympics of Massachusetts.
  • On June 14, 2022, Chief Stone and Detective Ciara attended the swearing-in ceremony of new Canton Police Chief Helena Rafferty.
  • On June 17, 2022, Chief Stone met with Mr. James Arena-DeRosa, candidate for the Massachusetts House of Representatives, regarding issues that affect local law enforcement in Massachusetts.
  • On June 21, 2022, several members of the police department participated in the “Popsicles with Police” event at the Placentino and Miller Schools. Over 1,400 popsicles were handed out to students in grades K-5.

Upcoming Events:

  • July 25 – 29, 2022 – Session #1 of our 2022 “Junior Police Academy” will take place for students entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Follow our social media platforms for updates on this free, week-long program.
  • August 2, 2022 – Members of the Holliston Police Department will be on hand at Goodwill Park for the annual “National Night Out” event being held in conjunction with the Holliston Parks and Recreation “Summer Concert Series.” Families are encouraged to stop by and meet your local police officers.
  • August 8 – 12, 2022 – Session #2 of our 2022 “Junior Police Academy” will take place for students entering the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Follow our social media platforms for updates on this free, week-long program.
  • August 24, 2022 – The Holliston Police Department will be once again partnering with Boston’s Children’s Hospital for a blood drive event in the front parking lot of the police station. The BCH Bloodmobile will be collecting blood donations from 9:00AM-3:00PM. An online sign-up process will be announced in the coming weeks.
  • Fall 2022 – The Holliston Police Department will be hosting another session of our “Citizens Police Academy” at the police station. Residents who are interested in participating in this unique learning opportunity should keep an eye on our social media updates for registration information.
