Civics Sunday: A Guide to the State Primary Election

Massachusetts registered voters are eligible to cast a ballot in the upcoming State Primary Election.  Tuesday, September 6, 2022, (the day after Labor Day) is the day for in-person voting.  The deadline for registering to vote is August 27, 2022.

In addition to voting in-person on September 6th, voters may opt to vote-by-mail or cast their ballot via early voting.

Vote-by-mail is outlined here -> State Election Information

Early [in-person] voting in Holliston will be available at the Town Hall in Room 105 at the following dates / times:

Voters registered as Democrat will receive the Democratic Party Primary Ballot (sample below).  Please note that the ballot color does not correlate to the colors often associated with the major parties.

Registered Republicans will receive the Republican Party Primary Ballot (sample below).

Registered voters who are not affiliated with either major party are referred to as “Unenrolled.”  Unenrolled voters may choose either a Democratic OR Republican Primary Ballot to cast their vote.

Holliston is in the 8th Middlesex State Representative district and the 2nd Middlesex and Norfolk State Senate district.

Those running for each office have campaign websites that provide a broad view of each candidate’s position on issues, experience, and endorsements.  We have provided links below to the candidates on the Democratic Primary Ballot for our local legislators.

State Representative: Democrat James Arena-DeRosa

State Representative: Democrat Connor Degan

State Senate: Democrat Karen Spilka

On the Republican Party Primary Ballot, one candidate is on the ballot for the 8th Middlesex district.  Write-in space is available on the Ballot for all open seats.

Below is a link to the Republican candidate to represent Holliston and the surrounding towns in the State House of Representatives.

State Representative: Republican Loring Barnes

Most importantly, using whatever voting method best meets your needs, please vote.  The polls are open on September 6, 2022, from 7:00am to 8:00pm at the Holliston High School Field House.

Town Clerk Liz Greendale provided statistics on voter turnout at elections held in Holliston between 1988 and the May 2022 Town Election.  State Primary elections average about 20% participation (about twice the average turnout for Town elections) in Holliston.

Recently, these words caught our attention: “Democracy happens at the local level.”  (Arthur C. Brooks, Harvard Business School)
