Council on Aging Holds November Meeting

The November meeting of the Holliston Council on Aging was held on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.  Chair Yvette Cain called the meeting to order at 2:00pm with all members present in person.

First up were updates from the Senior Center staff.  Asst Director Amanda Boralessa-Looper reported that with the holidays approaching, preparation for several events and gift distribution are underway.  Outreach Coordinator Melicia DaCosta shared that there has been a significant increase in requests for fuel assistance – all Hollistonians in need can contact Ms. DaCosta (508.429.0622) for fuel assistance.

Director Lisa Borchetta (below left) reported that the recently completed UMASS Senior Survey received 1,323 responses – about 30% of Holliston’s 55+ population.  UMASS is collating and tabulating the data now.  Two presentations of the data will be held in January.  January 9, 2023, at the Select Board’s weekly meeting, and on January 17, 2023, at 11:00am at the Senior Center.

Borchetta shared that the staff is looking at how to streamline the logistics associated with the many classes, activities, and meals held at the Center.  The goal is to reduce the amount of labor required for table / chair set up and take down.

A $21,500 taxi grant has been received from the MA Development Finance Agency. The grant will be used to serve the increased number of seniors requesting transportation.

It is not too late for seniors to apply for the Senior Safe (HFD grant) and Habitat for Humanity (ARPA grant) Critical Home repairs programs.  Contact the Senior Center to request assistance (508.429.0622).

Director Borchetta hopes that Holliston will pursue the Age / Dementia Friendly Community designation.  https://www.mass.gov/info-details/examples-of-age-and-dementia-friendly-community-characteristics  Such a designation opens access to grants and other support.

Peter Eagan (above right), an Associate Member of the CoA, will continue to serve as one of the seven-member Envisioning Future Holliston committee.  He will be representing all the entities within the Human Services category.  The EFH committee will add the data from the Senior Survey to the data already collected in the EFH survey and work with a consultant to define a vision for Holliston.

Chair Cain recognized CoA member Carmen Chiango for his participation in an episode of HCAT’s “Just Thinking” related to sidewalks in Holliston.

A sub-group of CoA members and Sr. Ctr. staff continue to refine the Center’s Code of Conduct.

Representatives from the United Way will give a presentation at the December (12/14/2022) CoA meeting.

The meeting adjourned at 3:05pm.
