Student Intern Thanks Mentor

From Tyler Greenberg, HHS Student

Tyler Greenberg

Holliston High School student Tyler Greenberg served as a two-term intern for Ahronian Landscape and Design.  Mark Ahronian, one of our advertisers, sent us Tyler’s final essay from the Student Internship program led by Ms Sue Stone, Career Services Coordinator. Both Tyler and Ms. Stone agreed to the publication of this essay.  We hope you like it as much as we did!

My internship was in the landscaping profession. I was an intern at Ahronian Landscape and Design. While there for two terms I learned a lot about what makes a good landscape company. The first thing that Mark and the crew taught me was plants—plants are a must-know because they have different growing conditions, pruning seasons/methods, and how big/small they grow. Another skill I was taught was how to create a design by hand and on the computer, Mark brought me to a real client’s property where we met with them to see what they wanted and once the design was finished, we presented it to the customer.

Chris, a former intern and now designer taught me the CAD program on the computer for their computerized designs. I was also out in the field being shown how to do installations of plantings and some hardscape projects in which I was able to participate, as well.

After working as an intern at Ahronian, I feel it has helped me further my knowledge and skills in the landscape profession and showed me what to build my landscape company morals on. Mark has taught me that being friendly with everybody that you do business with from supplier to customer is very important. I brought my basic knowledge of the landscape industry from running machines, driving trailers, and basic labor practices to my internship to give me a foot up on the learning. Mark helped me by giving me some tips on how to grow my business and by teaching me the tricks of the trade. He even offered me a job after I graduate to help me learn more and practice while still running my own company. This internship will help me in the future with growing my own company and growing a professional profile.

I want to say thank you to Mark and the whole crew at Ahronian for taking me in and teaching me. They took time out of their days to teach me what they know and how to do things the right way which they did not have to do, and I am very thankful for that. I can’t wait until I start working with them again in the late spring.
