Another Great Year for the GHSMGA and the Holliston Pantry Shelf

Almost every Tuesday and Thursday between April and November / December, members of the Greater Holliston Senior Men’s Golf Association (GHSMGA) can be found chasing a small round ball around on an 18-hole property somewhere.  About twenty players who live in the Greater Holliston area make up this Association that has been in existence for more than two decades.

The GHSMGA recently held its annual awards banquet. Be sure to note that everyone is looking in a different direction – just like on the links!

COVID-19 has brought some lasting positive changes that we all know as the “new normal.”  The old normal MIGHT include some nominal wagers when playing golf.  Early in the pandemic it was thought that passing money could pass the virus.  No problem, the GHSMGA went to a season long tally maintained by our Chief Financial Officer Peter Eagan.

This year marks the third annual donation from the GHSMGA to the Holliston Pantry Shelf.  Based on Mr. Eagan’s accounting, the “winners” and “losers” were identified, and everyone donates to the cause of food insecurity in Holliston.  In 2020, the donation was $531; 2021 saw an increase to $703; and this year the total rose to $1,015!

GHSMGA Commissioner Wally Thornton presents the donation to Pantry Shelf Treasurer Dave O’Neil while members of the GHSMGA make sure that the money reaches the intended charity.

It is important to note that the donation was delivered on a Wednesday and that it was raining – two things that assure the GHSMGA members are not on the golf course. (The day after the presentation, five members of the Association played 18-holes at Stow Acres in 55-degree weather!)

The idea of donating to such a worthy cause makes coming up a little short on a putt not as painful.

As CFO Eagan pointed out at the donation ceremony, the 2023 season is just around the corner and everyone starts with a clean slate.

Thank you, Chris, for the delightful puff piece on our group, the GHSMGA (pronounced ghsmga). After flying under the radar all these years we have been finally outed by your powerful bit of investigative journalism; although in the spirit of disclosure you did not mention you are a card carrying member yourself. No worries, your final tally in the season ending results is safe with me. Alas, yesterday’s snows have driven us off the local courses and forced us indoors to the simulated golf range where it never rains and the temperature is always seventy degrees. Unfortunately that setting does not lend itself to fair betting as some of us have taken adavantage of the computer enhanced performance that restores our youthful prowess in the game. The food pantry is going to have to wait for the return springtime weather before we can start building up our balances again.
