HPD Monthly Update: May 2023

Personnel Highlights:

  • On May 2, 2023, Sergeant Remkus and Sergeant MacGray attended a one-day “Firearms Legal Update” course in Southborough, MA.
  • On May 2, 2023, Chief Stone held a Command Staff meeting with Lieutenant Thompson, Lieutenant Barrett, and Administrative Assistant Kelly O’Rourke.
  • On May 3, 10, & 17, 2023, all members of the police department attended their annual spring range qualifications at the Hopkinton Sportsmen Club.
  • On May 4, 2023, Officer Parent attended, via Zoom, a half-day training course entitled “Responding to Crisis”.
  • On May 4, 2023, Chief Stone and State Representative James Arena-DeRosa attended the Legislative Breakfast sponsored by the Middlesex County Chiefs of Police Association in Burlington, MA.
  • On May 5, 2023, Lieutenant Barrett and Dispatcher Tuttle attended their annual “CPR/First Responder” training course at the Holliston Police station.
  • On May 9, 2023, School Resource Officers Woods and Ciavarra attended a two-day “School Resource Officer Safety Conference” in Norwood, MA.
  • On May 9, 2023, Sergeant Andrew MacGray reached twenty-one (21) years of service with the Holliston Police Department.
  • On May 11, 2023, Officers Hulme, Palencia, and Keefe attended a one-day “Officer in Charge (OIC)” training course in Mansfield, MA.
  • On May 11, 2023, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Barrett, School Resource Officer Woods, and School Resource Officer Ciavarra attended a school safety committee meeting at Holliston Public School’s Central Office.
  • On May 12, 2023, Sergeant Hagan and K-9 Mattis successfully passed the National Association of Police Working Dog Association (NAPWDA) patrol re-certification course at the Worcester County Sheriff’s Department.
  • On May 15 – 16, 2023, Sergeant Remkus attended a two-day course entitled “Nomadic Transient Criminals & Their Perfect Victims – The Elderly” in Franklin, MA.
  • On May 15 – 16, 2023, Lieutenant Barrett and Detective DiGiorgio attended a two-day Detective’s Conference” in Boxborough, MA.
  • On May 18, 2023, Officer Todd Hagan reached twenty (20) years of service with the Holliston Police Department.
  • On May 18 & 24, 2023, all members of the police department attended a four-hour training block on “Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) and Handcuffing Techniques” at the Holliston Police Department.
  • On May 19, 2023, Chief Stone and Lieutenant Thompson attended their annual “CPR/First Responder” training course at the Holliston Police station.
  • On May 23, 2023, Lieutenant Thompson attended an online “Police Officers Standards and Training (POST) Commission” training portal.
  • On May 25, 2023, Officer Charette attended a one-day “Field Training Officer Refresher” course in Andover, MA.
  • On May 29, 2023, a full department training meeting was held in the John Johnson training room.
  • On May 30, 2023, Chief Stone attended a “Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (Metro-LEC) Executive Board” meeting at the Westwood Police Department.
  • On May 31, 2023, several members of the police department participated in an “Intruder Response” drill at the Miller Elementary School.
  • On May 31, 2023, Lieutenant Thompson submitted the annual “Bullet Proof Vest” grant with the Department of Justice (DOJ).
  • On May 31, 2023, Lieutenant Barrett and Officer Grace attended a “Traffic Advisory Committee” meeting in the John Johnson training room.
  • On May 31, 2023, Chief Stone joined Town Administrator Travis Ahern, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Kustka, Director of Social Emotional Learning & Equity Jariel Vergne and Youth and Family Services Director Jackie Winer to tape an episode of “Ask the TA” at Holliston Cable Access Television. The topic of this month’s episode centered on the variety of mental health resources available to residents within our community. Click Here to View Program
  • During the month of May, Sergeant/K-9 Hagan and K-9 Mattis completed their mandatory 16 hours of in-service training with the Boston Police K-9 Unit.

Community Relations:

  • On May 3, 2023, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Barrett, Sergeant Belson, Sergeant Hagan, Officer Parent, School Resource Officer Woods, and School Resource Office Ciavarra participated in the “Bike, Walk, and Roll to School” event sponsored by the Safe Routes to School organization.
  • On May 4, 2023, several members of the police department visited with the residents of Cole Court at their monthly residents meeting to introduce some of our newer officers at the department. We discussed many of the roles that we play within the community and answered questions about topics raised by the Cole Court residents.
  • On May 6, 2023, Officers Downey, Coakley, and Grace participated in the Town of Holliston “Public Safety Touch-A-Truck” event at Holliston High School.
  • On May 15, 2023, several members of the Holliston Police Department participated in a Police Memorial Day ceremony followed by breakfast with fallen Officer John Johnson’s family at the Holliston Historical Society.
  • On May 19, 2023, School Resource Officer Ciavarra attended the Holliston High School Junior/Senior prom in Quincy, MA.
  • On May 21, 2023, several members of the police department assisted the Holliston High School Administration for the Class of 2023 senior parade.
  • On May 24, 2023, Chief Stone, Lieutenant Thompson, Lieutenant Barrett, Detective Barrett, Officer Grace, and School Resource Officer Ciavarra attended the Class of 2023 senior barbeque at Holliston High School.
  • On May 29, 2023, members of the Holliston Police Department marched in the annual Memorial Day Parade.

Upcoming Events:

  • June 5th – July 14th – The Holliston Police Department is actively recruiting new candidates for the position of full-time Police Officer. Applications can be submitted to Human Resources through July 14, 2023.
  • July 10th – 14th – Session #1 of the Holliston Junior Police Academy for students entering the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be held at Holliston High School. This is a FREE summer camp experience for Holliston residents.
  • August 1st – Members of the Holliston Police Department will be on hand at Goodwill Park for the annual “National Night Out” event being held in conjunction with the Holliston Parks and Recreation “Summer Concert Series.” Families are encouraged to stop by and meet your local police officers.
  • August 7th – 11th – Session #2 of the Holliston Junior Police Academy for students entering the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be held at Holliston High School. This is a FREE summer camp experience for Holliston residents.
