Marigold Project Still at It

If you we’re thinking, “Gee I didn’t get a donation letter from the American Legion Downtown Marigold Project this spring,” you’d be correct. We actually had enough funds from previous years to fulfill the 2023 mission. Also in the good news category is the fact that since the first week in June when the hanging baskets were deployed, we haven’t had to water — not once. Mother Nature can turn on her charm every once in a while, weeding is another story.

The “Big Brother” lilies which were planted by the Marigold Project a number of years ago in front of Casavant Realty at 755 Washington Street are in their full peak of splendor this week.

That weeding process has happened at least twice to date at the: Historical Society, Central Burial Ground, Congregational Church, Hollis Street, Casavant Realty, the planters at CVS and Casey’s Crossing and the flower bed just off Central Street to the new parking lot behind Casey’s.

The former three flower beds at Blair Square have been replaced by two large entrance beds (Central Street) at the revamped square. Cannas, sunflowers, marigolds, and zinnias fill the beds. This spring the Town Hall received a planting of marigolds (the town flower) along with cannas. DPW workers this week cleaned up the town square of ever-growing weeds.

The Marigold Project work continues with hardy mums to be planted around town in September in time for Celebrate Holliston.
