Mother Nature Controls All

The folks at Celebrate Holliston were skunked twice in the last few weeks, canceling their festivities on September 23rd, and again on September 30th due to inclement weather. Goodwill Park, the intended site on the 30th held an inch of water on Saturday morning. In an ironic twist the folks over in Mudville, a stones throw away from Goodwill Park held their annual block party on Saturday on dry pavement in cooler temps. The Mudville Block Party which began in 1981 with the expressed purpose of neighbor meeting neighbor lived up to its reputation on Saturday. Former Mudvillian Meg Femino who is now a resident of Medfield was walking the rail trail with her granddaughter when she spotted the commotion below on Union Street. Not knowing about the block party, she investigated. It was old neighbor renewing acquaintances with former neighbors.

There was plenty of activities as the food truck rolled up on the corner of School and Union Streets. An ice cream truck made an appearance later in the day just about the time as the pie eating contest began. There were fire pits to ward off the chill of the day, although the kids didn’t seem to mind. A cotton candy vendor whipped up green cotton candy as the kids played corn hole a few feet away. Town Historian Joanne Hulbert was seen handing out MDVL logo bumper stickers to deserving neighbors while the Mayor hocked iris rhizomes (roots) for free to future gardeners. The live band, WMD even knocked out a few Irish tunes in a nod to the neighborhood’s humble beginnings. Its all about community folks.
