Lighting Program Continues

If you appreciate the lighting downtown during the holiday season thank a Holliston Lion or better yet Chuck Baker. In the mid 90’s Baker, a Concord Street resident, thought the downtown area could use a dose of holiday spirit. He was soon joined by Mark Ahronian who then enlisted the help of the local Lions Club.

After several years Ahronian passed the project off to local realtor and fellow Lion Ed Daniels who upped the ante with fundraising and expanded lighting. The torch was then passed to Lion Steve Apesos.

This past Sunday morning Apesos along with a crew from the Lions and Leos were hard at work stringing lights at town hall a day after the Lions Club had served veterans in upper town hall, living up to their motto “ We Serve”. Apesos told the Holliston Reporter that the tree in front of town hall will serve as the unofficial Christmas tree this year due to “Carolyn’s Tree”, (a reference to Carolyn Dykema) a blue spruce at Blair Square being relegated to the dust bin during recent renovations.

All is not lost at Blair Square becayse Lions Kevin Conley and Peter Barberi are heading up a project to place ten plus 8′ lite trees sponsored by local businesses and groups in the park for the holiday season.

Apesos noted that lighting in the town square is iffy due to Eversource dismantling the wiring and meter box which supplies the power in the business district during construction at Exchange and Washington Streets.

Town Facilities Manager Jim Keast is urging Eversource to hurry with a remedy. It’s all about community folks.

Seeing the festive lighting is always a highlight of the year. Thanks to everybody who helped to bless Holliston with this gift.

Thanks for all the effort for lighting up the downtown area, it is very much appreciated. I hope that the snowflakes will also be lit up this year as it was sad to not see them lit last year. Is it possible to volunteer to help with these lighting efforts? Do you have to be a Lions Club member?
