Writing Contests Announced for High School Students

The Holliston Cultural Council and the Holliston High School English Department are sponsoring two writing contests this spring.  One is a poetry-writing contest. The other is an essay-writing contest.  There is a cash prize of $100. for each contest winner.

The topic for each contest is “You’ve Got to Start Somewhere.”  An example of one way to write a poem with this title is at poetryfoundation.org:

Poem Sample

All submissions are due April 1, 2020, by midnight.  Submit your work to Mr. Murphy, Holliston High School English Department.  Judging will be completed by April 20, 2020.

Details:

  • Mr. Murphy and other members of the Holliston High School English Department will judge the contests.
  • Any Holliston High School student may participate.  Any resident aged 14 to 18 on April 1, 2020, who attends a different school may also participate.
  • Submit a hard copy, printed version of your poem(s) or essay to Mr. Murphy.

Poetry: 

  • You may submit up to three poems.  Each must be titled “You’ve Got to Start Somewhere.”
  • You may use any definition of a poem you think right. 
  • The length of your poem is up to you.

Essay:

  • Use the title, ”You’ve Got to Start Somewhere.”  Interpret the title any way you want.
  • Length:  300-2000 words.
