Celebrate Holliston – 2025 Citizen of the Year

John J. Cronin has called Holliston home for the past 32 years, where he and his wife Denise raised their two children, John P. and Elizabeth. Over nearly three decades, John has become a cornerstone of civic life in Holliston, having served continuously in elected and appointed roles in town government for the last 28 years.

What John loves most about Holliston is the strong sense of community spirit; the way people are always willing to step up, pitch in, and look out for one another, making the town truly special.

His extensive public service includes membership on the Finance Committee (1997–2000), Golf Advisory (2000–2001), Board of Assessors (2003–2018), and the Select Board (2018–2024). In addition, he has contributed to two Chief of Police Screening Committees and two Town Administrator Screening Committees. Currently, John serves as Chair of the Holliston Sewer Commission and recently became the new host of Holliston Cable Access Channel’s community program “Just Thinking.”

What makes John’s contributions especially notable is that, despite describing himself as inherently shy, he has consistently chosen to step into public-facing roles – positions he admits can be challenging but also deeply rewarding. For John, civic involvement is a two-way street. He is inspired to follow in the footsteps of many mentors to give back to the community which he says has given his family so much over the last 32 years.

Some of the highlights of his service include:

Transforming the Finance Committee in the late 1990s into a more transparent and accessible body by introducing an annual written message to the community, clearly explaining the town meeting warrant.

Advocating for strong leadership by helping to hire a highly skilled and professional Town Administrator, which was instrumental in the successful passage of Holliston’s first Town Manager Special Act.

Championing critical infrastructure investment by supporting the Department of Public Works override and associated capital funding to secure long-term improvements to essential town services.

As Holliston’s 2025 Citizen of the Year, John Cronin exemplifies the spirit of selfless service. His dedication, humility, and long-standing commitment to the town have left an indelible mark on the community and serve as a powerful example of what local volunteerism can achieve.

Jane E. Gilfoy has lived in Holliston for 36 years, where she and her husband Bruce raised their three sons, Casey, Taylor, and Cameron. Jane is deeply grateful for her family’s love and encouragement, which have been central to her journey as a volunteer.

With a professional background in social services, Jane has always had a natural inclination to serve others. Her passion for volunteering was sparked early on by the example set by her parents, who were active in both national and local organizations wherever the family lived.

What first drew Jane to Holliston was its small-town charm and strong sense of community – a welcoming place to raise a family and becoming involved. Over the years, she has met countless inspiring individuals who have fueled her own commitment to giving back. Her journey began with Cub Scouts, while juggling a full-time job and raising young children.

From there, her volunteerism expanded across the community. Jane has generously given her time and talents to a wide array of local causes and organizations, including Holliston Youth Lacrosse, the Holliston Athletic Boosters Association (HABA), Celebrate Holliston, the Cycle for Life Ride for Haley (CF), town, state, and federal elections, Holliston Cable Access Television (HCAT), the Holliston Business Association, the Holliston Historical Society, and the Holliston Pantry Shelf.

Now retired, Jane continues to volunteer with the same passion and purpose. She currently serves on the boards of both the Holliston Historical Society and the Holliston Pantry Shelf. Jane noted that she feels honored to support the two organizations that are filled with dedicated and committed volunteers that are working to make Holliston a better place for all.

Reflecting on her decades of service, Jane hopes her story will inspire others to get involved in their own ways. As this year’s Citizen of the Year, Jane exemplifies the spirit of service, commitment, and community that define the very best of Holliston’s volunteers. Her dedication, generosity, and tireless efforts make her a shining example of what it means to truly give back.

Join us on at CELEBRATE HOLLISTON’S FIELD DAY ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20th at Damigella Field, 10:00am. to honor these two inspiring individuals.

  1. Excellent choices for COY 2025. Both Jane and John have made public service a large part of their lives. Holliston is a better place because of them.
