Watch for Turtles on the Move This Spring

As the weather warms, turtles across Massachusetts begin their annual migrations to nesting sites, often crossing roads along the way. While turtle movement peaks in June, you may start seeing them on the roads anytime from late May through July, depending on species and local conditions.

If you see a turtle crossing the road:

  • Do not pick it up unless it’s in immediate danger.
  • If safe to do so, you may gently move it only in the direction it was headed. Never relocate it elsewhere.
  • Never lift a turtle by the tail; support it from underneath the shell.
  • Use extra caution with snapping turtles, they can be defensive and have powerful jaws. It’s safest to gently encourage them from behind with a long, blunt object rather than picking them up.

The Holliston Conservation Department is seeking help identifying areas where turtles commonly cross. If you see a turtle crossing or notice a recurring spot, please let us know. This information helps guide decisions about signage, public awareness, and, where possible, wildlife barriers or safe crossings.
