Week 6:
DYR took down Jasper Rock, 13-5 behind the bats of SS Jason McDonald (4-4, 3B, 2B, 4 R, 4RBI) and 1B Matt ’The Hebrew Hammer’ Rider (2-4, 3B, 2B, 3RBI) while P Justin Lessard (7IP, 7H, 3ER) cruised in the circle. In the 3rd, Rider hit a moon shot to left at Kampersal that ricocheted off the rock 100 ft back towards SS holding him to a double but that still drove in 2 helping DYR to an 8-0 lead after 3. An undermanned Jasper squad left them with 3 outfielders, so CF Jeremy Cordon ran approximately 14 miles in this one to make several putouts while OF Paul Howland (3-4, 3B, 2B, 3RBI) hit a 2-run triple to left in the 7th to cut the lead to 8.

Downtown mauled Brentwood, 19-3 as OF Tim McCarron (4-5, 2B, HR, 3R, 4RBI) and 3B John Lynch (3-4, 2 2B, HR, 3RBI) paced the offense. McCarron’s 3-run shot in the 4th ignited an 8-run inning to put this one away. P Mike Adams (7IP, 7H, 2ER) was in control from the start while his counterpart, P Doug Schmidt (6IP, 11H, 10ER) was roughed up but almost made a key defensive play in the 4d. With 2 on and 2-out trailing by just 3, he fielded a hot grounder to his right but then proceeded to trip and fall backwards and spiked the ball into the ground allowing the runners to score and the batter to take 2nd. This set the stage for OF Scott Burke (4-5, 2B, HR, 4R, 3RBI) to then hit an opposite filed inside-the-park HR to right to drive in 3.

In the late game, Kampersal humbled Johnson North, 11-3 as as 1B Alex’The Big Hurt’ Kampersal (3-4, HR, 4RBI) belted a 3-run HR in the 3rd put the 3x defending champs up 5-0 and they never looked back. OF Brad Rowe (3-4, HR, 2B, 3R, 2 RBI) kicked off the scoring with his 2-run shot in the first and then Kampy’s played their usual stellar defense to keep the JN high-powered offense in check. P George Kampersal (7IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB) pitched well despite walking in a pair in the 5th and also contributed offensivley with a RBI triple in the 5th. In the 4th, pinch-running for 3B Keith Carlton (2-3, 2B, RBI), OF Chris ‘Prime-time’ Boggess (2-3, HR, 2R, 2RBI) trotted out of the box on a ball hit deep to left thinking it was going to be caught at the fence only to see it fall for a 2-base error single. Apparently he was perfecting his trot as he later connected on a 2-run shot in the 5th that landed just shy of the playground in left to extend their lead to 7. It took him approximately 45 seconds to complete his trot around the bases. OF Denis Dietz (1-3, R) played well in CF for the victors. Johnson North had nothing to report offensively as 2 of their 3 runs came when George Kampersal did his Ricky “Wild thing’ Vaughn impression in the 5th with 3 walks in the inning.

South walked-off Braggville, 12-11 behind a 3B Kevin Abreu (3-4, 2B, 2RBI) single to left that drove in the winning run. Despite deficits of 5-0 and 8-1, South battled back to cut it to 11-9 heading into the bottom half of the 7th thanks to the efforts of OF Sean Jacquet (3-4, 2 2B, 3R, 3 RBI) and OF Greg Copeland (3-4, 3B, 2B, 2R, 2RBI) to set up Abreu’s heroics. Another week, more umpiring ‘incidents’ involving South. Early in this one, a South batter grounded to short and a close play at first ensued, yet no South players were in EITHER coach’s box to make the call…which means ‘OUT’ to every other team…nope he was called safe. In the bottom of the 7th trailing by 1 with 2 on and 1 out, a South batter hit a grounder to short that set up a potential game-ending 6-4-3 double play, but the batter-runner was ruled safe at first on a very close play. On the winning hit by Abreu, Braggville 2B Chad Engle (3-4, 2B, 2R, 2RBI) contested that the ball hit the runner from 2B on the foot as it bounced into the outfield but no confirmation from anyone else nor admission from the baserunner. South wins….

Dalton Rd pounded The Hood, 13-3 behind the bat of OF Derek Jordan (4-4, 2B 2R ,3RBI) and the arm of P Chris Munroe (7IP, 5H, K, 2ER). Munroe has done great work in the circle this season as no one has heard from or seen regular starting P Dave Birmingham in months. SS Brendan Hines (3-4, 2B, 3RBI) had a rough night in the field catching 2 grounders to the family jewels yet stayed in the game. To spark their offense, The Hood, rolled out walk-up songs for each hitter’s turn at bat which worked as well as a 1-armed wallpaper hanger. 6 hits and 3 runs are not going to cut it. Weird that 80’s hits like “I Love a Rainy Night’, ‘Angel of the Morning’, and “I Just Died in Your Arms’, didn’t create the spark manager Colin Fields thought it would. Love the effort, though, Skip.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Dave Birmingham, please notify his coach.

Lions beat Kingz, 10-6 as P Pete Barbieri (7IP, 6H, K, 3ER) silenced the Kingz lineup all night except in the 6th when Kingz plated 5 to tie it. Kingz Rookie OF Brian McGee’s (2-3. 2B, 3RB) 2-run double drove in OF Alex Wolfe (3-4, 3R) with the tying run. But the Lions would answer in their half of the 6th with RBI doubles from 3B Zac Smith (2-3, 2B, 2RBI) and OF Jason Morrissey (2-4, 2B, 3RBI) to plate 4 and Barbieri would end the game with strike-out with runners in scoring position.

Mudville nipped Anthony’s East, 8-7 as back-up 3B Matt Brauer (3-5, 2B, 3RBI) delivered a clutch 2-out, 2-run single in the top of the 7th to put Mudville up by 1. Mudville SS Ken McFadden (3-4, 3B, 3R) then preserved the win with a sensational backhand stab of a 2-out liner headed to left with 2 men in scoring position. Mudville now moves to 2-0 without their volatile 3B Eric Kuharich (DNP, gone fishing). When asked about the opportunity to take over for the HSS perennial All-Star 3B, Brauer responded, ‘Who? The Mudville locker room will be ‘must see tv’ next week. No news to report on from the Anthony’s side as manager Mike Delprete (0-4, 3K, HBP) continues to not send me anything resembling a game review.

GAME OF THE WEEK for Wk 6 (6/1/25))
Johnson North (4-1) vs. Anthony’s East (2-3) at Damigella @ 6pm
- Is the Anthony’s OF defense good enough to track down the inevitable long balls from the powerful JN line up and cut off potential doubles and keep to singles?
- Can Johnson rebound from the loss to Kampersal and pitch and play solid defense that’s needed to be a veteran opponent?
*Prediction: Anthony’s 16 Johnson North 14
(My Record: 5-0)
