Farm Report December 17th

by Bobby Blair 12/18/09

The 2010 seed catalogs started to arrive well before the Christmas cards this year, sort of like seeing the Christmas decorations in the stores before Halloween is even over.

About the only plant, vegetable or fruit folks are thinking about now are Christmas trees, sugar plums and that poinsettia plant that may need watering.

It pays to shop around. The above dahlia tuber can be purchased from Swan Island Dahlia's in Canby, Oregon, for $22.95.

A similiar dahlia from Netherland Bulb Company in Eaton, PA, can be purchased for $1.47 if you purchase at least sixteen tubers. In other words - five dahlia tubers from Swan Island would cost $114.75  yet the same amount of money would get you 78 tubers from Netherland Bulb. The same type of deals can be found when buying slightly larger quantities online. Seeds are expensive in small quantities, so why not pair up with a neighbor or fellow gardner to place your order and save a buck?
