Declan Vail Joins HPD at Age 3

To say that young Declan is a police groupie would be an understatement. He proudly wears his uniform several days each week – even when he is receiving treatment at the Dana Farber Institute.

Declan met Bentley University Police Officer Ryan Hanley when their two lives intersected thanks to the Pan-Mass Challenge. Officer Hanley is part of Team Kermit which raises money for brain cancer research / treatment. Declan became Ryan’s ‘Bike Buddy’ and their friendship has grown ever since.

Holliston Police heard about Declan’s love of law enforcement and made arrangements to swear him in as an officer. Officer Hanley, joined officers from Holliston, Hopkinton, Franklin, Westborough, Springfield College, and Monson to witness this auspicious event.

Declan raises his right hand (with guidance from Officer Hanley) to receive the oath of office from Holliston Town Clerk, Liz Greendale.
Just part of the swag that Declan received from the HPD and the other departments that attended. His official certificate is at the center of the picture. Even K-9 Mattis provided a stuffed replica of himself for Declan to cuddle (if that’s o.k. with a police dog).
Declan, with his parents Jeremy and Stephanie, and his Bike Buddy Officer Hanley admires his shiny police cruiser. To be fair he also received a toy fire truck.
Look at all the smiles Declan brought to this room full of adults. Declan’s younger brother Teagan tried to steal the show, and Declan let that happen. What a perfect temperament for a police officer.

Declan received a personal message from the HPD that acknowledged how proud they are to know such a courageous young man.

Publishers’ Note: These are the things that make Holliston such a special place and our police force is at the center of the caring. Thank you!
