The Finishing Touch on the Rail Trail

The Holliston Rail Trail has a new, clear path through the once gravel parking area between Central and Church Streets.  The newly paved parking area adjoins the clearly marked stone dust trail.  The safety of walkers and bikers through this area is greatly improved.  But it just didn’t happen. This was a great example of teamwork in action.

It all began with a grant secured by Karen Sherman, Town Planner.  Holliston DPW Superintendent Tom Smith oversaw the master plan.  Key people and companies were lined up so the sequence of events could fall into place.  First came site preparation by Murray Construction.

Next the drainage was addressed by contractor Ted Valpey and the DPW crew.  The binder coat of asphalt was paved by PJ Albert, Inc.

Then the Rail Trail Committee enlisted AJ Tuttle Paving to lay the stone dust surface.   Posts and rails were installed by Reliable Fence, clearly defining the trail from the parking areas. The tar berm and finish coat, another job by PJ Albert, helped things to really come together.

Parking lines will be painted next week by Markings Inc., with only the crossing signals at Church St, signage and cosmetic landscaping remaining.  Wow!

Much has happened since Labor Day through the combined talents of many.  The project would not have progressed so well if not for the dedicated, hardworking crew from our DPW.  Many hours of effort by the crew are greatly appreciated.  The public can clearly see the results of cooperative efforts to make this much used trail safer and more easily accessible.  Thanks to everyone for a job well done.

Kudos to Peter Barbieri for the vision, and behind the scenes work to secure easements, site layout and engineering, and various other details that enabled the grant application and the project to come together.

An echo to Shaw’s comments. Credit goes to the Blair Square Committee members as well as the Trail Committee and a big thanks to owners and staff of GLM Engineering for their donated efforts at the drafting table and in the field!
