Library Trustees Approve Budget

All members were present for the Library Trustees meeting with the Library Director on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.  They approved the January meeting minutes and proceeded to attend to Director Deric Wilson’s report.

Wilson relayed that a minor roof leak had been repaired, and as the roof is still under warrantee, no costs were incurred.  Perhaps more importantly, no books had been lost.  Wilson also reported the early closing of the Library due to snow on January 23.  The Library closed at 4 PM, after receiving word that the Town Hall would be closing early as well.  Wilson will ask Facilities Director James Keast to update the Building Condition Report in preparation of a new round of grant proposals.  The Director will meet with the Finance Committee for Budget Review on February 28.  Wilson contacted a neighbor to the Library for possible parking space availability but was informed—with apologies—that space could not be provided.

Chair Karla Alfred ( photo above) complimented Wilson on the inclusion of Holliston Library programs and the attendance of each in his Director’s Report. Trustees briefly spoke about the upcoming One Book, One Holliston author program with Nathanial Philbrick in the Gilman Room, at 6:30 PM on February 8.  At least 50 people have registered.

Wilson had emailed the Library Budget—including a narrative written by Wilson—to Trustees.  Discussion followed specifically concerning the request to increase a part time position to a benefits position and other hourly increases, which comprised the majority of the budget increase.  As a “level service” budget was requested, Wilson elicited thoughts from the group.  Trustees supported the increase, noting that if the increase was not approved this year, it would likely appear on next year’s budget as well.  The total budget is $624,769.00—an increase of 11.16%.  All present voted to support the FY24 Budget.

Wilson noted that the Library does not have an Inclement Weather Policy.  Trustees reviewed past varied practices and agreed that a written Inclement Weather Policy was a good idea.  Alfred located another town’s Inclement Weather Policy online, reading it aloud to the group.  Upon hearing the details included within the policy, the group was in favor of a more comprehensive document.  The agenda of the next Trustees meeting — March 1, 2023, at 7 PM—will include presentation and discussion of a more comprehensive policy for Holliston.

Article says “50 people have registered.” It’s my understanding that those are people who want to view presentation from home. If one plans to watch it AT the library, no registration is needed. So there may be many more than 50 in the end.
