Week #4:

Kampersal took down Mudville, 12-4 behind the bats of OF Brad Rowe (3-4, HR, 2B, 4 RBI) and 3B Garrry Desimone (3-3, 2 2B, 3R) while P Tom Kampersal spun another gem to lower his league-leading ERA to 1.03. Up 2 in the 4th, Rowe connected on a 2-run shot that landed in the playground at Goodwill.  Not to be outdone, ‘The Big Hurt’ 1B Alex Kampersal (3-4, 2B, 2RBI, 2R) followed with a 455 ft rocket that never went higher than 13’and almost killed Mudville LCF John Gagliardi (2-3, RBI, R) who dove for it only to nearly lose his hand in the process as the ball richocheted out of his glove and almost made its way back to the infield.  Galgiardi laid motionless for a few minutes as he waited for blood to start flowing back to his glove hand before resuming play.  Desimone also lined one back to P Eric Higgins (7IP, 10H, 5ER) that the pitcher was able to get his glove up for and hold on for the out but not before losing feeling in that hand for 2 innings.  Kampersal also got help from OF Denis Dietz (2-3, 2R)

Mudville’s John Gagliardi lies motionless after attempting to catch the laser off the bat of Alex Kampersal.

Another memorable play occurred in the 4th when All-HSS C Brian McShane (2-4, 2B, R) finally saw the fruits of his efforts in backing up 1B on infield groundballs for the last 10 yrs as he did, in fact, prevent a thrown ball from going out of play.

Dalton Rd beat The Hood, 18-9 as the powerful duo of 3B Kevin Lauze (5-6, HR, 2B, 4RBI) and SS Brendan Hines (5-5, GS, 2B, 7RBI,4R) carried undermanned (9) Dalton Rd to victory.  P Chris Munroe (7IP, 9H, 5ER) was solid again in the circle while his battery mate, C Bob Cotting (4-5, 3R) shined at and behind the plate in this one.  1B Kevin Secur (3-5, HR, 3RBI) got the scoring started with a 2-run bomb over the RF fence in the 1st.  Up 11-9, in the 5th,  Dalton would explode for 7 runs on the Lauze and Hines HR’s and Munroe would ensure the lead would hold over the next 2 innings.

Scary moment in the 5th as player-manager Steve Cotto (3-4, 2B, 2R)  injured his knee diving for a low liner in LF yet stayed in the game and will be a game time decision this week vs Mudville.  The Hood was led by SS Greg Andreola (3-4, 2 2B, 3RBI) and the late arriving LCF Dan Mauro (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI) who also had an OF assist in nailing Munroe at the plate in the 5thC Bruce Stebbins (3-4, 2R) stayed hot for The Hood while P Shawn Peters’(2-4, R) mustache is still not having the expected impact from the circle.

Downtown pulled the upset of Wk 4 and took down Johnson North, 14-7 thanks to a solid all-around defensive effort as they flashed the leather quite a bit in this one.  OF Mike McKenna (3-4, 2B, 2RBI) and OF Scott Burke (4-4, 2 2B, 3R) each made great catches in the early innings as JN tried to take the lead.  But the biggest catch occurred in the 6th thanks to OF Tim McCarron (3-4, 2B, 2RBI).  Trailing by 3 in the 6th with 2 on and 2-out, JN’s OF Chuck Kerchner (3-4, 2 R) hit a sinking liner to CF that McCarron got a good jump on and made a sensational shoe-string catch to end the threat.  Downtown would go on to score 5 more in their half of the 6th to put this one away sparked by a OF Todd Kiley (3-4, 2B 3R), 2RBI) double.  Johnson North was led by LF Jarrod Jordan (3-4, 3B,2RBI) and 2B Derek Darling (3-4, 2B, RBI, 2R).

Anthony’s edged Braggville, 11-8 despite P Chris Landers (7IP, 10H, 6ER) poor start in this one as he gave up a GS in the 2nd to newcomer, OF Keith Morin ( 3-5, HR, 2B, 5RBI, 2R) that put Braggville up 6 early.  After a lead- off HR by Anthony’s OF Joe Carroll (2-4, HR, 2B, 3RBI) in the 1st , Landers struggled with control early but eventually settled down and gutted out the win.  He received defensive support from his veteran left side of the infield as SS Dave Robinson (3-4, 3R) and 3B Dan Higgins (2-3, 2B, RBI, R) made several web gems to keep Braggville at bay.  LF Ben Pratt (4-4, 2B, 3RBI) had the key hit in the 5th to put Anthony’s ahead for good as his 2-out double scored 2.  OF Mike DelPrete (2-4, 2R) heroically battled a cold to play and was the inspiration he’s teammates need to pull this one out.

South edged Lions, 33-5 as P Greg Copeland (5-6, 2 2B, 4RBI) helped his cause while OF John Green (5-6, 3B, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 3R) helped South jump out to an early lead and never looked back.  Lions P Mike McKenna (7IP, 14H, 9ER) was the hard luck loser as his defense let him down consistently throughout this one.

Jasper Rock edged Kingz, 35-31 in the highest scoring game in league history (no idea if that’s true, I’m just too lazy to look it up) as 3B Doug Herman (6-6, 3 2B, 4RBI),  OF Paul Howland (6-7, HR, 2B, 6R) and OF Jared Esposito (6-7, 2 2B, 4RBI, 5R) paced the victors.  Despite only having 3 outfielders and trailing 35-19 heading into the last of the 7th, Kingz put together a 12-run rally that had Jasper P Derek Cordon (7IP, 42H, 24ER) sweating this one out.  Kingz CF Ryan Smith (7-7, HR, 2B, 3RBI, 4R) sparked the rally with a 2-run double and 3B Ross ‘Big Hoss’ DuBuc (6-7, 2 HR, 2 2B, 9 RBI) connect for his 2nd HR of the night, a 3-run shot giving him a league-leading 4 in the young season.  But with the tying run in the on-deck circle, Cordon got his first K of the game to end it.

DYR blanked Brentwood, 21-0 as P Justin Lessard (7IP, 5H, 0ER) spun a gem.  DYR put up 6 in the 1st and 8 in the second thanks to lead off hitter Rookies OF Pat McCray (4-4, 2B, 4R) and OF Brian Kuhn (4-4, 2B, 3RBI, 2R) led a balanced attack and the defense was solid again in this one.

The lone bright spot for Brentwood was C Dave Carosella (2-3) and his homeplate brush.  The consummate professional had home plate nice and shiny before the first pitch in every inning.  Dave takes this responsibility seriously, just check out this selection I saw post game in his trunk!

GAME OF THE WEEK for Wk 4 (5/10/26)

Anthony’s East (3-1) vs. Downtown (2-2) at High School @ 6pm

  • Downtown will be riding high rolling into this one after its upset of JN last week and the HS is the perfect spot to play deep and take the long ball away from Anthony’s and minimize the big inning.
  • Anthony’s, despite a forfeit, has its eye on the final four and a win here keeps them in the hunt.

*Prediction: Anthonys’ 15  Downtown 10
