Ask the Assessor

The U.S. Postal Service is changing the way mail dropped in its mail boxes in the afternoons is postmarked, but Holliston is not affected because it is within 50 miles of the central Post Office facility in Providence, R.I.

However, given that mail dropped in a USPS mailbox in Holliston gets shipped to a central Post Office facility before coming back to Holliston to be delivered to a Holliston address (such as the Assessors’ Office in Town Hall), it’s always a good idea to put abatement and exemption applications in the mail several days before these application deadlines:

— September 15th (Senior Means-Tested property tax exemption)

— December 1st (Chapter 61, 61A and 61B lands)

— February 1st (property tax abatements)

— April 1st (personal exemptions)

The Assessors’ Office would like to remind Holliston property owners that if they want personal exemptions reflected in the third and fourth quarter property tax bills – which are mailed out in late December – they need to be received by the Assessors’ Office no later than mid-November.

This will give the Assessing staff time to review them, have the Board of Assessors approve them, and then enter the exemption into the municipal accounting system.
