She Loves Me based on play that inspired You’ve Got Mail; Weston Friendly Society second oldest community theatre group in U.S.
(Weston, Nov. 1, 2025) — Holliston resident Sarah McGowan will take the stage Nov. 22-29
in Weston Friendly Society’s production of She Loves Me, the holiday-set romantic comedy that
Deadline calls the best Broadway musical you’ve never heard of.
.Well before direct messages on social media and dating apps, two shop clerks in a 1930s
European parfumerie, Georg (played by Robert Orzalli of Boston) and Amalia (Dana Sullivan of
Newton) separately respond to a “lonely hearts” ad in the newspaper. Often at odds at work, they are unaware that they are each other’s unlikely anonymous admirer. McGowan plays one of the shop’s customers and the hostess at the café where Amalia goes to meet her “dear friend.”
McGowan is also the president of the Weston Friendly Society Board of Directors.
She Loves Me is based on the same 1937 play (Parfuemerie) that inspired the classic 1998 Tom
Hanks and Meg Ryan film You’ve Got Mail as well as earlier films The Shop Around the Corner
and In the Good Old Summertime.
The script is from the same writer as Cabaret (Joe Masteroff) and songs are by the Fiddler on the Roof songwriting team (Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick). Songs include “Vanilla Ice Cream,”
“Tonight at Eight,” and “Twelve Days to Christmas,” so it’s only fitting that performances
bookend the Thanksgiving holiday, opening the Saturday before Thanksgiving and closing the
Saturday of Thanksgiving week. It’s the perfect outing for families hosting (or visiting) for
Thanksgiving.
She Loves Me will be performed at the Weston Town Hall on Nov. 22, 23, 28 and 29. There are
7:30 p.m. performances on Nov. 22, 28 and 29 and 2 p.m. matinees on Nov. 23 and 29. Tickets
are on sale now at www.westonfriendly.org. Reserved seating at cabaret tables and balcony
tickets are available for $28 for adults and $25 for seniors and students. The performance venue
is accessible; patrons can take an elevator to the main performance level.
The Weston Friendly Society, the second oldest theatre group in the United States, will close the 2025-2026 season, its 141st , with the musical Mary Poppins, April 18-25. Auditions will be held Nov. 9 and 10 at the Weston Town Hall. For more information about either of these productions, visit www.westonfriendly.org or email westonfriendlysociety@gmail.com.
