Holliston Youth Basketball Recaps (2/8 games)

BOYS:

4th Grade Boys (White) Coach: Peterson

This past Saturday, Holliston’s 4th grade boys (white) team had a home tilt against Hopkinton at Adams Gymnasium, falling by a score of 48-13. There were some positives to take from this effort, as the hometown squad won the 4th quarter, 9-8. Aiden Doss had a strong game, contributing 8 points, and David Girgis scored his points of the year on a nice bucket off of a great steal and then assist by teammate Jayce Sweet. Max Burian (2) and Youssef Lahiani (1) rounded out the scoring for the Panthers.

This week’s effort award goes to Jayce Sweet, for his work to improve defensively and hustle when going after rebounds.

This coming weekend, the boys have a full-slate, with a make-up game against Medfield on Saturday afternoon and a trip to Arlington, early Sunday morning.

7th Grade Boys (White) Coach: Kanavich

7th Grade Boys (Red) Coach: Keller

Holliston’s 7th grade boys (black) traveled to Westwood this past Friday night for the first of two weekend games.  It was a thrilling back and forth contest in which Holliston showed tremendous fight, overcoming deficits of 9 points in the first half and 8 in the second.  Four quarters were not enough to settle it as both teams were tied at 33 at the end of regulation.  In the extra frame however, a few quick baskets by Westwood were too much to overcome.  Laksh Khatri led all scorers with 16 points including making all 8 free throws.  Leo DeFazio had 9, including a three-pointer, Jackson Gannaway added 6 and Krill Stotski 2.

The weekend’s second game was a much anticipated battle between very familiar teams.  Similar to Friday night’s game, the team played with much heart trying to battle back from a tough second and third quarters, but ran out of time to close the gap.  Laksh Khatri scored 11, Noah Keller 2, Leo DeFazio and Leo Wagner each had a bucket, while Jackson Gannaway and Daniel Levens each sank a free throw.  On Sunday, the team makes its second trip of the season to Milton in an effort to return to its winning ways.

8th Grade Boys (Red) Coach: Furey

The Holliston 8th grade (red) team had a great bounce back week this past weekend, defeating an annual foe in Concord-Carlisle, 41-29, despite being short handed.  In what has become a recurring trend, the boys had a very well balanced offensive attack.  They didn’t force shots, waited for opportunities and chose wisely.  Quinn McErlean was an offensive machine, dropping 17 points.  Following Quinn on the offensive side was Tristan Snyder (8), Ben Furey (7), Orson Daniels (4), Sam Israel (2), Achyut Pingali (2) and Chris Baker (1).  Tristan, Orson, Achyut, Quinn and Andrew were a force on the boards, and along with Chris, Sam and Will Hayes were excellent on defense helping to maintain our lead throughout the game.  The team will travel to Dedham this coming weekend to try to get a win streak going.

8th Grade Boys (Black) Coach: Ennis

Despite digging out from several inches of snow, the 8th grade boys team (black) made it to Medway for their afternoon game. The Black team played a formidable defense, attempting to block shots that unfortunately eluded them. Their efforts are steadily improving on both ends of the court.

The boys faced a challenging defensive team that was poised to take the lead at the end of the game, ultimately securing a 51-25 victory. Paul Kattab led the team in scoring with five points and eight rebounds, while Bior Ayuen contributed four points. Keirnan scored two points and grabbed three rebounds, Nick Skaf scored four points and pulled down four rebounds, Zach Ennis scored two points and grabbed five rebounds, CJ Landers scored five points and grabbed nine rebounds, Sam Peters scored four points and grabbed four rebounds with three assists.

The boys will resume their competitive season this Sunday with a home game against Hopkinton.

GIRLS:

5th Grade Girls (Black) Coach: King

The Holliston 5th grade girls (black) had another solid weekend with two wins—one over Hopkinton and one over Belmont.  The Hopkinton game was decided by hustling and rebounding as not a lot of shots were falling until the 4th quarter.  In the Hopkinton game, Signe Strand was a standout player—she had the hot hand with an impressive scoring run in the 4th quarter netting 4 straight baskets for 8 points.   Maggie Mulik was also an impact player making crucial steals and grabbing a bunch of rebounds.  Josie Brower has continued to be a solid defender in all games using her defensive prowess and speed to create steals and fast break scoring opportunities.  In the Belmont game, the team worked hard against a feisty and energetic backcourt in a late night showdown on the road.  Josie Brower scored a season high 14 points with many fast break opportunities created by her defense, running the floor to receive the open pass from her point guards, and making great moves in the post.  Millie Guellnitz also scored a few huge hoops in the 4th quarter to solidify the win for the girls.  Olive Bennett played a very strong game as the floor general making great passes and taking her own offensive opportunities when they arose.  Lennon King dished out quite a few assists to her teammates on the fast break by looking up the court and also netted 8 points.  The team continues to improve and work on all areas of the game as they head into the end of February with a bye next week and just two games to go after that.  Best of luck to all teams this coming weekend!

5th Grade Girls (Black) Coach: Wing

The Holliston 5th grade girls (black) traveled to Hopkinton to play against the Hopkinton Hillers this past weekend The Panthers added another win to their record, making them 7 and 1. The girls started the game strong, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. The intensity slowed down in the second and third quarters as Holliston struggled to put points on the board. However, the team was able to turn it up in the forth with solid defense and aggressive offense, which helped to secure their win.

Olivia Wing came in hot and demonstrated more confidence with her shooting, putting up multiple shots and hitting two sweet jumpers (one being, “nothing but net.”) Brooke McGrath played aggressive defense and as always, made some key passes throughout the game. Julia O’Shaughnessy also played strong defense and received and passed the ball well.

Amelia Parker and Winnie McHugh each put up 6 points. Amelia was aggressive both offensively and defensively as well as worked hard to move the ball around when on offense. Winnie stood tall and established a strong presence under the hoop, which allowed her to put up 3 great, successful shots.

Willa Drummey had another awesome game of perfect defense and landed a pretty little “swish” basket. Katelyn Klein continues to impress with her killer ball handling and drives to the hoop. She scored two baskets and made numerous flawless passes that set up teammates with great shots.

The Panthers really showcased their ability to move the ball during this game and played as a team, utilizing one another nicely. The girls all played solid basketball and we hope to continue to shine in our next home game against Brookline.

7th Grade Girls (White) Coach: Roche

With just 6 players, the Holliston 7th grade girls (white)  headed to Bedford to play a tough and deep Lady Buccaneers team.  After being down 12-2, the girls fought back but ended up losing 28-15.  Lindsey Haynes didn’t let shoveling her driveway earlier that morning slow her down and led the way with 6 points and 6 rebounds.  Elle Lessard was great on defense and had 6 steals along with 4 points and 4 rebounds.  Louisa Bigelow had a season-high 3 assists, along with 3 points and 5 rebounds.

The team returns home this coming Sunday afternoon to host Wayland at the Adams gymnasium.
