It’s been 44 years since the first Mudville Block Party in 1981 but the idea of bringing neighbors together endures. On Saturday September 27th Union Street was alive with music, pie eating, neighborly gossip and local politics.
This was a good chance to capture Mudvillians thoughts on a new proposed DPW. Are you for or against locating a new DPW at the present site on Arch Street? This was an unscientific survey asking those that I recognized living in the neighborhood. Residents questioned hailed from Arch, Winthrop, Exchange, School, Mechanic, Spring , Union and Pleasant Streets. One School Street resident needed more information and when I mentioned Lowland Street he said “where’s Lowland Street”. Some questioned if there was enough land at the Arch Street site.
Others were concerned about the proximity to the rail trail. What if they locate it elsewhere what would they put there? several people asked. None of those questioned complained about noise from trucks presently using the current facility. There were many more questions than answers but of the 26 Mudvillians I questioned the results were somewhat surprising. One person said no (a former selectboard member) one needed more info, and 24 folks said yes, keep the DPW where it is and rebuild it. Bringing
neighbors together is what Mudville does best and there you have a sampling of what Mudvillians are thinking.
