Who’s just back from basking in the sun and tunes of the Newport Folk Festival? If live music and salty air define your dream summer, Songs in Ursa Major by Emma Brodie is a must for your beach bag. Grab this book and start reading!
Songs in Ursa Major by Emma Brodie is a fictional retelling of the love affair between James Taylor and Joni Mitchel. The book opens at the Bayleen Island Folk Festival in 1969. Bayleen Island, a very Martha’s Vineyard-esque island, is home to local musician, Jane Quinn whose world is turned upside down when the headlining performer crashes his motorcycle on the way to the show. So starts Jane’s journey to find love and fame. On the way, she must overcome the stigma of her mother’s mental illness, the male dominated music industry and her lover’s drug addiction. Quick paced and well written with a deep cast of memorable and relatable characters, this a quick summer read with plenty of grit and heartache to balance out the romance and fun.
‘Shot through with the lyrics, the icons, the lore, the adrenaline of the early 70s music scene, Songs in Ursa Major pulses with romantic longing and asks the question so many female artists must face: What are we willing to sacrifice for our dreams?’
This book is a treat for the senses… you can smell the ocean, hear the music and taste the delicious meals that are cooked up. And if you are a fan of folk rock, James Taylor and/or Joni Mitchell, you will be transported. Read this one when you are looking to escape to the 60s music scene – young love wrapped up in nostalgic, summer vibes.
