The Holliston School Committee (HSC) met on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 7:00pm in the Holliston High School Library. The entire meeting was recorded and may be viewed here:
The meeting started with introductions from this year’s student representatives who gave updates on upcoming high school events including Homecoming on October 4, the fall musical, HS Club Fair and Cell Phone policy. (see minute 1:05 of video for discussion)
A number of the HSC members congratulated the Robert Adams Middle School for the distinct honor of earning the 2024 National Blue Ribbon School Award. RAMS is one of only nine schools in the state of Massachusetts, and the only MA middle school, to receive this honor.
There was one public comment statement from Jason Cooper, President, Holliston Youth Basketball Association (HYBA). He requested that HYBA be able to rent the Adams and Placentino gyms starting at 5:00pm instead of 6:00pm. The basketball program has grown over the years and the additional time would help HYBA schedule practices for teams during the week. (minute 7:15)
Jariel Vergne gave a Safe and Supportive Schools update that covered data from various sources such as the MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey, Mood Check Screenings, and Attendance Numbers. Jessica Beattie provided a HPS Student Services update that provided information on how we are meeting the needs of all of our learners. (minute 13:58)
Following this, the HSC voted to rescind the policy on Early Graduation. Going forward, this process will be in accordance with the High School Handbook. (minute 1:28:23)
Central Office provided updates on the Math Study Group and most recent Professional Development provided to teachers and support staff at the start of the year. (minute 1:29:18)
Next the HSC discussed old business. A number of members including guardians, teachers, HSC members, and a select board were appointed to the newly formed Bus/Start Times Advisory Group and will be working on adjusting the school times. (minute 1:55:46) Additionally, some of the current bus routes continue to be an issue with late pick ups/late arrivals. Administration is aware of these issues and is still working to remedy the situation.
Finally, the HSC discussed the proposed Town Manager Act. As a committee, the HSC supports this act as amended with language agreed upon with the Select Board. (minute 2:06:59)
