As we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, here is a timely item from the Society’s collection.
A late 18th Century sword and scabbard from the period of the American War for Independence. It features a spiral wooden grip and brass ferrule and pommel but is missing the knuckle bow and guard. The leather scabbard which accompanies it features tooling and brass hardware. The sword has many characteristics of an American colonial manufacturer but appears to have been patterned after European prototypes.
It is unusual to have a sword with its original scabbard, making this item extra special.
