Turf to Surf
What we do here on land directly effects the oceans. Runoff from lawns, farms, streets, parking lots and construction sites is a major source of pollution. Tributaries carry it to the Charles, and the Charles to the ocean.
If you live next to water, plant a buffer zone of trees, shrubs, and tall grasses to filter runoff and to provide habitat for turtles, birds and other animals. Use less fertilizer and avoid pesticides. Wash your car on the grass instead of your driveway. The grass and soil help filter harmful chemicals and accumulated road pollution before they can run off into waterways.
When pollution reaches the rivers and oceans, the silt, nitrogen and phosphorous rob waterways and the ocean of light and oxygen, creating “dead zones” where nothing can live.
